It didn't have to be an alien squid. It could have been any kind of alien monster. But by blaming Doctor Mahattan, they completely changed the meaning of the ending.
Yep. The squid was the smoking gun, but the mental imagery they broadcast is what caused humanity to band together. The classic common threat scenario.

Also, events clearly demonstrated Doc was beyond anything they could cope with, so in the context of the story, uniting would be just an effort in futility. The alien threat they were duped into believing existed, was a menace they could at least hope to defeat.

My favorite movie of the year, and one of the best made in the last ten years (IMO).
I still don't get how the plot was hard to follow.

The movie dragged and was disorganized. If it had been 90 minutes maybe it would have been better. It was TWO HOURS AND THIRTY FIVE MINUTES LONG. I actually, no fvcking sh*ting you, found that they have an extended version that pulls it up to THREE HOURS.

I am dead serious: Anybody who would watch that three hour version needs to be sent to a labor camp because they are absolutely not contributing anything positive to society.

I watched it twice in a week. The extended version. I contribute plenty
I'm reading through the source material now, too.
Labor camp. I'll be kind, though, you can either work on the flood dykes or in the mines.

I call the dykes!

KT
Common mistake. You think it's sunny and everyone knows the mines are bad, but we run them hard at the dykes because we use the worn out workers as mortar, like the wall in 300.

300. Now that is a damn movie. Any guy who didn't like it should go to a labor camp as well.

Not to mention that an alien threat would be a threat that was external and unknown. Doc M was, for all intents and purposes, created by the United States and unleashed upon the world. There would be lots of blaming and finger-pointing instead of uniting under that scenario.

Without putting words in his mouth I believe he was taking issue with the idea that any of them are.

Without putting words in Poulsonator's mouth, I believe he meant in relation to the world comic books and graphic novels, not to history in general. I may be wrong though.

I agree with this, I would have personally preferred the giant squid ending.

I like that one too, and it is the same director.

Thank god. Finally someone who shares my view on this pile of trash. The extended version ran over three hours and was so painful to watch I took two multi-hour breaks before completion. Easily the worst movie I have seen in a long time.

If you fall into these categories, I'd suggest watching something like Twilight or the latest Will Farrel movie.

Watchmen was a decent movie.

That's right. There's no way a normal person without psychiatric problems would not like this movie, right? Must mean something is wrong with him, not the movie.

Just like there's no way someone can actually be an atheist without wanting to kill themselves, right?

Back on track: I enjoyed the movie. Never read the comic (though the movie made me interested, so I'm gonna check it out), and did not find the film difficult to follow in the slightest. If the presence of a glowing CGI penis is honestly that upsetting to you (and I'm generalizing to everyone who complained about this), then you're part of the puritanical sect of America that needs to grow the fuck up and realize that the human body is not inherently gross. It's a penis, for God's sake; you probably have one yourself. Do you cry every time you're naked?

I find it shocking that people can watch a movie with brutal violence, including lighting people on fire, blowing people into bits of goo, shooting a pregnant woman, murdering dogs, attempted rape, burning a man with boiling grease, tossing a man out of a highrise, slicing a man's head to pieces with a hatchet, a gang of thugs beating an old man to death with a trophy, a series of limbs broken in extreme close-up, a man's teeth punched out of his mouth, a man's arms sliced off with a rotary saw, and a global annihilation of all major cities, and the thing they find to complain about is the presence of male nudity. What kind of twisted priorities do you have when wanton violence is fine but nudity is to be condemned?

Hahah yeah that was essentially Zack Snyder's reaction to the fans that were upset about the giant squid:
The fans, god love ?em, they?re all up in arms about the squid, (said Snyder.) What they should be up in arms about are things like shooting the pregnant woman, ?God is real and he?s American?, whether THAT?S in the movie. That?s my point of view, maybe I?m crazy.

I think the dr. manhatten ending worked better than the squid ending, combined with the imagery of veidt industry basically taking over afterwards. It wasn't about uniting the world, it was about ozymandias conquering the world ala alexander the great. He had to break down what existed to replace it with his future unopposed.

But the movie lacked a bunch of content from the comic, and wasn't as obvious a parody of the entire super-hero idea.

Me thinks somebody (OP) should come outta the closet for fear of looking at male penis.
