I never made any comment on the book, just on the movie. The trailer made the plot seem incoherent and just a jumble of unknown superheroes and costumes. I feel like this may be too much of a niche movie to have much box office success. I never made value judgment on the book or the actual plot, just from what the trailer showed. Seems like i shouldn't have to know anythig about teh book to enjoy a movie
I understand where you're coming from. It's just funny, because the book is the polar opposite of what you're describing. It is very dialogue-heavy, with almost nothing in the way of typical comic book action. I'm making the (possibly dangerous) assumption that the movie follows along those lines...maybe I'm the one being too presumptuous. The trailer, to me, just recreates some of the great, if brief scenes in the book that are immediately recognizable to those who've read it (Dr Manhattan in Vietnam zapping VC, on Mars in that weird glass clock thing, Archie rising up out of the river).

You're right though, especially if it follows the book closely, it may be too niche to be a commercial success. Hell, I hope it is. The closer to the book the better.

seems like it'd almost do better as a series on Sci-Fi rather on than as 1.5 hr movie.

I have never read the book. I knew nothing about it before I saw the trailer, I just think it looks really good. I have done a little internet research on the Watchmen and now I am even more intrigued. :)

I didn't even realize the blue guys were actually just one guy and not some sort of alien race until I read about the story on Wikipedia. I figured it would be a comic book/superhero movie when I saw guys in capes and masks but I wasn't really sure until the trailer said something about it being based on a graphic novel.

That said, as someone who has never read a comic book in his life and has no idea what "The Watchmen" is all about, I have to say they had better change their marketing direction if they want to suck people in. If it really is different from all those other comic book movies out there, they should show it. The way it's being presented now falls totally flat for me as well as everyone I know who's seen the trailer. Just another bland comic book movie, except this one features a bunch of characters we've never heard of and don't care about. Not sure why I'd want to see it when there are going to be so many other movies competing for my money.

Let me put it to you this way. "Superman" doesn't care about the world, "Batman" can't get it up, and the villain only wants world peace...

I'm a huge fan of the book, and the trailer blew me away. Once the movie releases, I'll be in for either a religious experience or a huge letdown.

Never heard of Watchmen till I saw the trailer and I thought it looked like complete crap. My friend felt the same as me. Second time I saw it with another friend I still felt the same and he had the same feelings as well.

comic premise does seem cool
resume of the director is fine...
the reservation i have about the movie is that it is written by the same guy who did Xmen, Xmen2, and the Scorpion King.... not exactly greats there

WTF goddamn it...

The trailer I saw at comic con totally blew me away. It's like the best trailer i've seen for any movie in my entire life. It blows the smashing pumpkins trailer posted by OP out of the water by many many parsecs.

Everyone should read the graphic novel as both trailers tailor more for the fans than the masses who haven't heard of it.

exactly, LOL, 'cause I've never heard of the Watchmen and I don't plan on reading the
graphic novels.

the fact they claim and market this as the most popular graphic novel series of all time
as some ploy to draw people to read the silly books is sooo lame. if this movie is tailored
only for the fanboys, it will have limited market appeal, and it will assuredly fail.

The thing is, it's listed as Time Magazine's best 100 novels since 1923 to present. That's saying a lot. It's also the only graphic novel to win the Hugo award.

Anyone who is into just reading good stories and being told good stories should read it.

Someone, somewhere, on another forum said it best..

If you have read any other graphic novel you've wasted your time.
