Yea, The Watchmen trailer looked dynamite. To me, it was the standout trailer before TDK. It had me squirming in my seat all WTF like, hehe.

Also. Smashing Pumpkins' tune was perfect fit:D

edit: FYI it was "The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning"

It sounded like a darker slower remix, but yeah, awesome. Incidentally, that was from another super hero movie sound track....:p

I never read the comics, wasn't into DC as much...

It's DC but is in no relation to any of the superheroes you know about. To set the story up, Moore had to create his own heroes though they are obviously based on known heroes to some extent (Rorsach = The Question, Night Owl ~= Batman).

Anyways, the Wiki page gives a succinct description.

Watchmen is set in 1985, in an alternative history United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union (the Doomsday Clock is at five minutes to midnight). It tells the story of a group of past and present superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts superheroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neuroses and failings, and who?with one notable exception?lack anything recognizable as super powers. Watchmen's deconstruction of the conventional superhero archetype, combined with its innovative adaptation of cinematic techniques and heavy use of symbolism, multi-layered dialogue, and metafiction, has influenced both comics and film.

I can't wait for this movie. I really think it should be well done. Moore will hate it, but he hates all movies made on his stuff. I don't blame him. If my creative work was bought, sold, and remade with out my consent, I'd be pissed too.

I will say that I could tell immediately from the trailer it was the guy who did 300. He loves those annotated pauses and slow-motion sequences.

Let's hope he doesn't over do them... again.

I thought they tried to get his consent (or at least input/thoughts/etc), but he doesn't like the idea of his stories being made into anything but a comic book.

From the movie version of the wiki.

Moore also told Entertainment Weekly in December 2001, "With a comic, you can take as much time as you want in absorbing that background detail, noticing little things that we might have planted there. You can also flip back a few pages relatively easily to see where a certain image connects with a line of dialogue from a few pages ago. But in a film, by the nature of the medium, you're being dragged through it at 24 frames per second."[67] Moore had opposed the adaptation of Watchmen from the beginning, intending to give any resulting film royalties to Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons.[24] According to Moore, David Hayter's script "was as close as [he] could imagine anyone getting to Watchmen." However, Moore added, "I shan't be going to see it. My book is a comic book. Not a movie, not a novel. A comic book. It's been made in a certain way, and designed to be read a certain way: in an armchair, nice and cozy next to a fire, with a steaming cup of coffee."

It took me awhile to realize that this choice of song MADE that trailer.

The depth of a Smashing Pumpkins song makes me question how good this will be as all I can pay attention to is the song:p

Watchmen game to preceed movie
<heavy_sacrasm>Yay! Does that include the ability to rape?</heavy_sacrasm>

Also...from MTV of all places...

My Chemical Romance To Perform Bob Dylan Cover In ?Watchmen? Movie
<copy>
Now that we?ve all seen the dazzling first trailer for next year?s ?Watchmen? flick, it has officially become my most-anticipated movie of 2009. And the news just keeps getting better, as director Zack Snyder has revealed exclusively to MTV News that the only post-1985 song in the film will feature one of today?s hottest bands.

?My Chemical Romance is absolutely awesome,? the ?300? director revealed. ?And Gerard [Way] is a huge fan of ?Watchmen?.?

Like the classic graphic novel, Snyder?s ?Watchmen? film will span the decades utilizing a ?Forrest Gump?-like soundtrack of period-evocative music from the turbulent Sixties, the me-decade Seventies and the awesome Eighties. But since the film ends in 1985, Snyder?s music needs to be capped after his Hendrix, Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel tracks have had their moments. Finding a way around the limitation, Snyder has launched plans to head into the studio with the emo-punk powergroup behind such hits as ?Helena? and ?Welcome to the Black Parade.?

?[Frontman Way] is a super-great guy, and an awesome musician, and so we?re trying to work with them right now to put together possibly a song for the end titles,? he revealed, adding that he wants MCR to revisit a classic Bob Dylan song. ?[They?ll perform] like a cover of ?Desolation Row,? or something like that.?

The track will close out the film, and will be the only modern composition making up the movie?s soundtrack. ?I?ve talked with him and I?ve heard a little bit of some stuff that?s he?s done,? Snyder said of Way?s early attempts to take on Bob Dylan. ?And it?s pretty freaking cool.?

The MCR singer is a lifelong comic book geek who attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City with plans to join the industry. Comic fans know him as the creator of ?The Umbrella Academy,? a successful superhero series that he?s poured his spare time into recently, and could possibly be turned into its own movie eventually.

?Honestly, he contacted me, just as a fan,? Snyder remembered of his first contact with Gerard Way. ?[He wanted] to say like: ?I hope the movie?s cool.? And then we went, ?Hey, maybe we can do something.? So it?s worked out pretty cool.?

For now, Snyder and Way will continue working on the Dylan cover for the film?s end titles; in the meantime, however, the director said he?s still being surprised every day as celebrities come out of the woodwork revealing themselves to be fans of the 20-year-old Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons classic. ?You find out there?s a Watchmen geek in there somewhere, like in any organization,? he grinned. ?It?s like a secret government group. You can sneak in by going, ?Come on, I?m a ?Watchmen? fan.?

on the contrary, from what i read on wiki this book is the polar opposite of the typical comic. I wouldn't be surprised tho if they designed the trailer to appeal to a more general audience who wants to see YACBM

seems like theres just too much stuff going on and theres no discernable plot. Sin City was attractive to the lay audience because of t he cinematopgraphy, not sure if this one will do the same

Are you saying this based on the trailer alone? Have you read the book?

Don't you think that's incredibly presumptuous?

let me get this straight, the watchmen have no real superpowers except for one of them, who sounds like he could rape superman with ease...guess I'll have to look into it, but as it is it just sounds incredibly lame

I never made any comment on the book, just on the movie. The trailer made the plot seem incoherent and just a jumble of unknown superheroes and costumes. I feel like this may be too much of a niche movie to have much box office success. I never made value judgment on the book or the actual plot, just from what the trailer showed. Seems like i shouldn't have to know anythig about teh book to enjoy a movie

I understand where you're coming from. It's just funny, because the book is the polar opposite of what you're describing. It is very dialogue-heavy, with almost nothing in the way of typical comic book action. I'm making the (possibly dangerous) assumption that the movie follows along those lines...maybe I'm the one being too presumptuous. The trailer, to me, just recreates some of the great, if brief scenes in the book that are immediately recognizable to those who've read it (Dr Manhattan in Vietnam zapping VC, on Mars in that weird glass clock thing, Archie rising up out of the river).

You're right though, especially if it follows the book closely, it may be too niche to be a commercial success. Hell, I hope it is. The closer to the book the better.
