i made a speculation on the cause of the delay. my speculation is likely, at the very least, in the ballpark. game performance is one of the last things that devs can polish up, naturally. Ubisoft said they need more time to polish this game, thats why they are delaying it. so then, is it not reasonable to deduce that they are struggling hitting their performance target on the hardware?

or maybe you just wanted to call somebody stupid

you didn't speculate anything, you said "devs are having a hard time making engines on these new consoles that give a truly next-gen experience". and i said it's stupid to come to that conclusion before the console is even out and anyone has even played any games.

ive actually played an xbox1 game (killer instinct, but was probably running on pc when i played it) and while it's not leaps and bounds over anything this gen, it is definitely not possible on the current gen looking the way that it looked when i played it.

No because the systems aren't even out yet and the first games on EVERY new console don't look infinitely better than the ones before it, it takes time.

Come on, these consoles will be out in a matter of weeks. This isn't speculation at this point. The videos did look progressively worse. That at least matches up to what he suggests, that once it actually had to run on final hardware, the engine took a hit.

It simply isn't going to be ready. Whether it's performance or visuals. This is a game that will also be on PS3 and 360 too so perhaps there's more to it than "next gen visuals look bad"

There's quite a bit of buzz about this game and I know a lot of people said they were going to pre-order it for the PS4 and Xbone. Be quite a few that will be none to happy. Spring 2014 is quite a big push back. Could be a six month delay. Must have run into some big problems. As I said in the PC forum, Ubisoft isn't exactly above putting out a pile of snot that fails to live up to next gen standards. Remember Haze? Of course you don't. :sneaky:

Oh well, I bought ACIV instead. Not much that could go wrong with that since they're basically recycling ACIII for it. From what I've seen, it looks very close to the PC version of ACIII. Which isn't a bad thing.

Its unlikely the delay is just performance related. Performance fixing that can't be done in a month or so is quite rare considering that the game does run and they have shown it off running.

I think its far more likely that the limited content we saw in the run up to the games release is more indicative of the problem. They simply haven't built enough of the game and its general content. Potentially they underestimated the effort in producing high quality characters (models and scripting) that resulted in the game being largely incomplete.

I say this because my own personal experience of optimising software is that while its an unpredictable activity in time period its not normally something that takes 6 months even for a big system.

I originally tossed performance optimizations out of my mind when I saw the large delay, but I think there's actually quite a good possibility that performance might be part of the problem. The most glaring issue about Watch Dogs release is that it's coming to six platforms (360, PS3, PC, Wii U, X1, PS4) with a brand new engine. They've most likely focused their development on the PC as it's always easier to throw more hardware and focus on optimizations later. However, it is an open world game, which tend to be harder to get right. Is it possible that the weaker targets (360, PS3 and Wii U) could be holding the release back? Ubisoft did delay Rayman Legends for months just to release it on more consoles even when the Wii U release was already complete.

I could also see it being a myriad of issues with performance being one of them.

Thinking about selling my ps4 when it comes in. There's just not a lot of launch games I'm interested in anymore, so I can wait.

Well I am a little disappointed, I have a Watch Dogs bundle pre-order in at Amazon. Actually, maybe it's a good thing. I'll hopefully still get my PS4 at launch and I'll pick up the game on PC when it comes out. Until then I will just have to find another launch title to go with my Madden 25.

Sadly there are more games I would get on Wii U and 3DS right now through the end of the year. Not impressed with launch titles on PS4 or XBO. If Kingdom Hearts or a Tales game was available I'd be golden. Watch Dogs was about the only launch title I would have been interested in.

Think Ill flip my PS4 just before Xmas and pick one up in a year when there are some non dude bro games available that have more colors than brown and green. As much as I want to open up and smell a new console on launch day... I guess my Zelda Wii U will have to do.

Otherwise Tales of Symphonia Chronicles and numerous others still pouring out like candy for PS3 for '13-'14. So sad that the PS3 finally flourishes at the end of its life. I would have KILLED for some of this years releases 5 years ago.

This was probably the one game that had me tempted to get a release console. I had decided to hold off so they could get release bugs worked out, but this was one of the game that had me questioning my patience.

So, good news for me <kinda>!

Personally I am glad we didn't get flooded with rpgs. Not because I dislike them in general but because they take a long time to complete and I would rather have a few really good ones in a timespan than 100 of them in 6 months and try to wade through the garbage to get to the good stuff.

I also think you are being extremely narrow minded toward the ps4 and xb1 but whatever. I'll be happily enjoying them both in about 30days. With more than just shooters BTW.

lol everytime i see exdeath type 'dude bro games' i laugh.

I'll admit I feel the same way he does at times but I do enjoy Battlefield and Halo among other shooters so I fall somewhere in the middle. It does sound funny to read that phrase though especially if you think of a couple of surfer type frat boys saying it like they are from CA lol. I always end up reading it to myself in the voice of Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High

What I might like that is due on launch:

Watch Dogs (delayed now)
Knack
Killzone (possibly even though it's a shooter but at doesn't look like a dude bro shooter, not sure)

Dudebro/rehash/cheapshit-franchise-multiplatform-shovelware-that-weve-seen-100-times-on-every-console:

Call of Duty Ghosts
Call of Duty Ghosts Prestige
Call of Duty Ghosts Hardened
BattleField 4
NBA 2K14
FIFA 14
Need for Speed
NBA Live 14
UFC
Injustice (movie/superhero license)
Just Dance (casual partyware)
Surprised there isn't a Spongebob and Wheel of Fortune announced yet

None dudebro but don't care about:

Lego
Assasin's Creed (possibly but it it looks like it turned into another dude bro shooter...dual gun wielding pirates with super powers yo!)

AAAAannnd that's it. Anything else that could be good is due 2014.

It doesn't get much more dude bro than shooters, UFC, sports, and Fast and the Furious inspired club street racing games.

And this is PS4 not even XBO.

You have to keep in mind I was spoiled in previous generations, games of the quality of The Last of Us are pretty much expected to be the norm.

Wait so why is Killzone not dudebro?

What about Halo series, is that dudebro?

I said possibly... re: killzone. I had to pick at least one shooter that was the least dudebro out of what will be available.

Shooters aren't automatically dudebro (see Fallout 3, Borderlands, etc).

Halo most definitely is a defacto dudebro staple. That said if I was interested in XBO I would HAVE to pick up Halo. You don't own an Xbox and not have Halo. Though sadly it's not so much the game that is dudebro as it's hardcore fanbase. At least it has single player and story. But in the end it's still a super hero billy bad ass shooter with regenerating health and knee high cover mechanics. I'd still play it like I played GoW 1-3 regardless how much I talk shit about it. Good for coop nights.

Bottom line is that the delay of Watch Dogs is a HUGE launch day setback. It was one of the only really interesting games at launch. If I would have picked up only ONE game with my PS4 it would have been it.

Dudebros and casuals:

Around_the_HouseMunster_Rd-1331115.jpg

That's what I think of when I see Call of Duty sales records and UFC/NFL/guitar type games. There is another pic that shows a couple of mouth breathing teens that have a slurred "ddduuuuudde" look about them playing xbox and eating doritos that I can't find, titled "the face of the mainstream gamer" or something. Bet they have every gun in CoD in their ...*snort* ...airsoft collection too! *chuckle*.

Halo most definitely is a de facto XBOX dudebro staple.

Killzone most definitely is a de facto PS dudebro staple.

FTFY.

If you think the Halo sereis is a "dudebro staple", then the Killzone series is definitely a "dudebro staple".

Sounds close to hypocritical to rag on it like that to only admit to being willing to buy it. You do realize the "good for co-op nights" is the reason dude bros play it, right? :|

I'll see if I can explain this.

GoW1: oh this is new, this is kinda neat
GoW2: more of the same...
GoW3: ok enough is enough already

The difference:

Dudebros still salivated and preordered 3 while high fiving other dudebroskis who also preordered it as if it was going to be the best thing ever. They still get excited by it.

Anyone else picked it up when it was in the clearance bin for $5 or at a yard sale for $1 just to have it.
