I think that a lot fewer people were killed by the Japanese Imperial Army than is commonly believed. The huge bowls of boiling water could've been non-existent.
I don't know how the myths got started, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was nothing more than Allied war propaganda. The victors tend to write the history books. It's just like with Lincoln. Lincoln is portrayed as the savior of the republic and his racism is ignored while Andrew Johnson's isn't (and he certainly hated rich people more than he hated blacks). I don't hate rich people, but Andrew Johnson wasn't a bad President. He was a bad Vice President, but once he took offfice, he changed his tune as much as the Red Republicans would allow.
