Was just looking over a hospital bill for my son....

Homerboy

Lifer
$284 for an Urgent Care visit (fine)
$194 to apply a finger splint. The same finger splint that A) didnt fit at all B) fell off before he even got home.

Stellar deal there.

It was 500+ when the GF had to go.

Visits are stratified based on how "intensive" the patient was. A "visit" charge in the ER where I work can run from just under 300 to just under 2k.

<edit>
My first warp that I'm aware of .. it brings a tear to my eye. .. and I've waited so long. ..sniff.

I'm editing that it was Urgent Care IIRC. Not the ER.
Regardless its the splint that is a

Doesnt it feel wonderful to pay those huge ass medical personel salaries, especially for boobery and incompetance? One of the true pleasures in life. :disgust:

I suppose it feels as wonderful as being completely ignorant of the topic.

Bummer. Healthcare is expensive. 🙁

I have no problem with paying for something that works... The charge for the Urgent care is well spent (examination, Xray etc) but a splint that isn't what's needed AND that falls off within 15mins? Give me a break. With the help of one of his teachers (a friend of ours) who also is a trained physical therapist, we wrapped it up properly and securely when we got home. The $194 for the splint is a freaking joke beyond measure.

Yeah, she had to get a joke of a neck brace...that was a couple hundred, on top of the 500 for just the visit.

insurance covered everything (car accident)....just thought it was odd how expensive it was.

the last time I was at the ER when I sprained my ankle about 15 years ago, it was $10 for two aspirin and $30 for a compress (ziploc bag with ice), crutches were around $75 and I forgot how much the xray was....I paid $50 out of pocket but the total amount of the bill was insane (over one grand)...

can't image that the prices would have gone lower since then..

Why was the splint not needed? I'm sure if it wasn't, you could dispute the charge. I have no idea what type of splint it was, so I can't make any claims about how it was put on or its cost. There is more to that charge, though, than simply the cost of the splint.

My brother had a 3-day stay in the hospital about a dozen years ago.

Looking over the itemized bill my mother had to request just to get, she noticed some odd charges. Among the more outrageous and/or blatantly incorrect were:

? $43 - (2) 250 mg Tylenol
? (3) Pregnancy tests
? (3) Days in a private room [he was in a semi-private... 2 people]

Fun times. ALWAYS ask for an itemized bill and always review it. Presumably, modern insurance companies would catch some of these things, but they can't catch it all. This and things like it are one of the many reasons health insurance is so expensive.

i was going to mention this. always get a itemized bill. i was in for 3 days like 10 years ago. on it they had slippers for $49, and other odds and end stuff that never happened. At the time i didnt have insurance so had to pay for it myself. i spent weeks (ok wife spent most of the time) yelling at the hosptial to get stuff taken off that we never got or was overpriced ($30 for a vicoden? WTF!)

Yes, surely it's all due to Medicare, and not non-paying ER customers who came in with a cold. I like the way you worked the partisan jab in there, though 😛

There are 2 line items on the bill:

Emergency Dept Visit: $284
Application of Finger Splint: $194.00

SOMETHING was needed, that's for sure, but it wasn't an adult finger splint on a 7yr olds pinky finger that's for sure. IT was 2x's the length and didn't even stay on for more than the ride home (~5mins). His entire hand was swollen and black and blue, so it was more than just a single finger too (they took xrays of the whole hand. NO broken bones. Though we did have to wait 3 days until Monday as no radiologists were on staff over the weekend 😕

The splint was useless from the get-go. When we got home, as I mentioned his teacher and our friend came over, looked at it and we rolled up some paper towles he could "cup" with his hand. We then wound his hand/fingers/wrist in an Ace bandage to help immobilize the whole thing.

As I stated early, I have no problems with being charged for the visit, X-Rays etc. But the splint application was pointless, incorrect and useless.

I will. But I have a feeling it will get me no where except lost time and aggravation. He DID get the splint. That's not an argument so getting an itemized bill isn't going to really help... its that the splint was hardly what was needed and really didn't work as it was clearly for an adult finger and not a little kids pinky finger. It was useless. I don't think they will credit me for that.

words of truth there. i disputed a 7000 dollar bill when my oldest was born, mainly because it was covered and paid for thru a county program for 750 bucks total. when i started looking at the list of stuff they charged me for, i noticed things like "electric breast pump - $750" that was offered to us and we declined. there was a charge in there for a courtesy pack, which they told me was the bag of goodies they gave us on the way out. we never got it. i got the list down to $1700 of actual charges, then told them to call the county since it was through their program. the billing lady was pissed, but fuck her. i didnt pay a dime of it. the add on charges were "doctor requested", which were covered under the plan i had.

our healthcare system is effed up and needs a full reform.

You want to see a messed up health care system go to Canada where it's illegal to see a doctor out of turn, even if you're dying. Our system might not be perfect but it's pretty damn good.
