There are worse places to live than northern VA.

What I learned in 2008 was, no matter how bad your life is now, something worse will come along to make the present seem like cake...so enjoy what you've got.

2008 was pretty good for me. No really big changes or anything, but I can now say I've had over 1 full year of the real world, and it's great. But I also realized I don't want to stay where I am, I want to move up. I can see myself grow sick of my job in say, 5 years from now if I don't change, but at same time, I think I'll really enjoy what there is to come. The real world just has way more freedom and different paths to take and looking forward to what 2009 will bring.

I was hoping to get some venture funding, quit my job and start my own company and move away, but that didn't work out. I got a promotion/raise at work, which is a pretty weak consolation prize. Didn't take any vacation, nor do any travel either.

A somewhat disappointing year overall.

Overall it was great. No health problems, no deaths in the family, got a promotion.

Tough year, 2008. Established my startup, worked all around the clock anticipating a better future. Only 2009 will tell, however. 2009 can be either wonderful or seriously depressing, depending on how we do. I'm thankful for the opportunities I've been given, and I'm in pretty good mood overall.

Got rejected from the jobs I really wanted, forced to move to a crappy city where I'm comfortable but damn bored everyday.

The more I tried to become social and meet people, the more desperate I seem so from this point, I'm not going to try anymore... some people don't even bother getting back to me so I feel disrespected. Don't want to try anymore, I tend to have better luck if I let them come to me.
Usually people have a significant other to keep each other's company but I must have some big issues that prevents me from achieving that and making other friends easily

2008 was supposed to be my lucky year (the year of the rats according to the Asian zodiac signs/astrology).
2008 has been nothing but a struggle

you forgot to mention you still haven't gotten laid yet despite numerous attempts.
the social problem is your own, not others - text

Graduated high school, finished my first semester of college, made lots of new friends, and I've gotten quite a boost in my self-esteem and confidence...I'd say it was a good year.

Edit: How old is Fritolays?

sometimes, and some parts of it.

You can say that about every city.

yeah, but more-so about NYC.

1.traffic
2.pollution
3.crime
4.cost of living
5.parking
6.have to drive a long way to get to saranac area.
7.close to nj.
8.and people think apple users are snooby and pretentious?
9.taxes
10.politics

i could go on...

what isn't crappy about nyc?

name one big city that doesn't have this. nyc has the lowest crime rate for a major city.
and wtf is saranac?

Normal. Nothing awesome nor catastrophic. Another waste of a year. One day I will wake up and wonder where I was when life happened.

Well, I graduated college, got a job making $80,000/yr, got a car, got a new computer, went from $2,000 in the bank to $12,000 and paid off half my student loans.

So, actually is was pretty crappy because real life sux compared to college, I have no friends, no girlfriend, work at a place where the second youngest person is 45 (I'm 23), and live in a town of 2000 most famous for putting a man on trial (and convicting him) for teaching evolution.

needed a change, so was going to completely switch fields and go into sales.

the current bad econ made me change my mind. (i have no sales experience.)

might just say fvck it and try hookers & blow till my $ runs out.

It was a pretty good year. I changed jobs for the better, got a much better manager, traveled a bit, picked up a certification I'd been working on for a couple years, dealt with inevitable joys of home ownership (sewer, water line, range, roof), no one died.

Rock solid plan. There's no way anything could possibly go wrong. :p

not so good for me. I had a miscarriage in may, Grandfather has been ill (he is a severe diabetic). Husbands grandmother has also been sick. Our local hospital is on the verge of closing which means my husband will be without a job for a while. Found out the other day my 8 year old brother is missing a kidney and the doctors don't know why, he has to see a specialist. Hopefully 2009 will be a better year

My 2008 was mediocre.
Sold my old townhouse in March finally, got a lot less than I wanted, but got what I needed. Things were very rough with my ex and we broke up this year. My job is pretty good, Started this position in Nov of 2007, and I like it well enough. It's the same company that I've worked for since 1996. I like the company plenty, and all of the management above me seem like hard working honest folks.

Paying mortgage on my house is rough, especially since I had to pay $ 3500 at the closing for the sale of my townhouse instead of collecting the $40,000 that I had originally hoped. (or more realistically, collecting 20K) (and it took about 6 months longer to sell than I had hoped, put it on the market fall of last year, before the "burst", but during the initial decline.)

Also, being raped by $4 per gallon gas prices for a good portion of the year really killed my budget. Car trouble was expensive this year (mostly Tires & AC work)

In 2008 I made the most money I've ever made in my life, however, I have the least amount of disposable income that I've had since I turned 16 and got my first job making next to minimum wage.

2009 could be a much better year if my job stays stable and oil prices don't spiral crazy high again.

From what I can tell, it's got a lot of traffic, it's loud, and it's crowded.... I'd call it crappy, then again, to me, the thought of living in any large city over about 100K people would be crappy ...

This year has been one of the best yet for me.
Reading P&N and L&R makes it seem just that much better.
I'm not as angry at life and insane as the P&N crowd and not as pathetic and hopeless as some in the L&R forum.
But even without being comparative, life is good!
