I think that ZapZilla has a very good idea. Make it so that members can easily and anonymously 'warn' the Mods about people neffing or generally behaving badly. We already have a system of User Ratings which is essentially worthless IMO... people only rate others when they're mad at them, and a rating can never be changed once it's been entered. A quick-and-easy method (single-click simplicity) of rating each post at a time would be a great way to start 'community policing'. Actually, the best way to *start* community policing would be for nefs/idiots to be ignored and/or talked down. However, this is of limited usfulness IMO since it often backfires and leads to more crap/flaming/etc and not any 'official' action taken.
It's kind of funny to me how AT really is like a physical community. There are different areas of town, so to speak... some people hang out mostly in GH or DC, with an occasional side trip into other peripheral areas, and some (who are completely at ease in their 'normal' forums) are so scared by their first visit to OT that they vow to never come back again. Others hang out mostly in OT with cautious ventures into the 'technical' forums every once in a while, but they're somewhat intimidated by the presence of the other members whom they've never seen before and who obviously know a lot (and who possibly look down their noses at OT 'chatroomers'), so they retreat back to OT and perhaps watch from the sidelines in the other forums. Almost everybody enjoys a good trip to HD, where members from all different areas of the community can congregate with a single goal in mind. Others feel at home everywhere and partake of every part of the community.
I think that Nate's original observation that OT is 'approaching critical mass' is particularly apt. Every community experiences growing pains, and in some ways becomes the victim of its own success. Whether it means demolishing houses to widen the streets, or going into debt to finance a new airport or cultural center, there are always 'turning points' in the evolution of communities. They are often a big PITA in the short-run, but a correct decision ensures continued growth well into the future. I think that AT Forums experienced one major decision with the creation of Subscriber accounts -- a decision that I think was the right one (I'm not a subscriber BTW). However, more obviously needs to be done. It is likely that there won't be a quick and easy solution, but with enough research and brainstorming (I think that threads like this are great for various people to air their ideas and opinions) the right decision can be made.
Turning OT or HD into subscribers-only forums is a bad solution. Almost all of the hardcore nefs and 'chatroom types' are already subscribers anyway, so it's not going to make a difference except by making the chatroom more exclusive. Also, many people are first drawn to AT by HD, and many are convinced to stay by OT, so it'd be counter-productive to limit it to subscribers. I know that the proposed solution will require a lot of programming and work to implement, but the community that doesn't make positive efforts to grow (and to properly direct growth) will stagnate and eventually die. It's not implemented in FuseTalk? Talk to the FuseTalk guys and get them to add it. Good solutions don't occur overnight, and I'm sure that AT is one of FuseTalk's biggest clients (if not the single biggest client).... they'd be idiots to reject a well-thought-out and useful feature suggestion.
