In regards to the suggestion of member ranking, I would throw into that the suggestion of getting rid of all member status rankings, including Elite.

I, personally, don't have much of a problem with OT, but I think part of the "problem" mention is this whole Elite Member title. I feel that there is a certain respect that people earn when they receive this title, but I feel that it also comes with some responsibility that some members aren't willing to carry. I feel that they should be the ones to set a good example for the members here rather than one that I and some other members perceive it to be.

There are some Elite members who constantly flame other members and I have no doubt that it gives people the impression that it's the way OT is (or should) be. There are others who have others post topics for them when they aren't at their computers just to 'say hi' as well as various other completely useless posts in Off Topic.

I feel that Lifers take on this responsibility as well, but the reason that they are Lifers is probably because they contribute to this.

I'm not saying I'm perfect or that I don't take part in some of the shenanigans that go on in OT, but I feel that most people in a new community lead by example and this is partly the result of a bad one.

I noticed that a few earlier posts have been discussing the issue of user ratings. We dont have them at OCAU....one reason being you will always get those people who go around rating everyone bad. This kind of tied in with people using Post Counts as a way to rate people, but then they started spamming in The Pub (OT Forum) so Agg (OCAU Owner) made posts in The Pub not count toward a user's post count. Although there was outcry at the start (mainly from the spammers) it was soon accepted and seems to be working well. Agg tied this in with his policy of "Forum Quality"; a reform of The Pub which allowed no crap to be posted. Abuse of other members, Pointless threads/posts, and discussion of illegal activities are now banished, and in some cases members have been dealt with by temp bans, and in one particular case, the member was banned indefinatly.

That's an excellent suggestion. Although eliminating postcout stats altogether would in my opinion not be a good idea (this has been rehashed many times, so no need to go into that), making posts in Off Topic not count toward one's postcount would probably help stall a lot of the NEFs. Of course, if the policy were implemented, some NEFs might feel the need to move on over to General Hardware or another such forum - some vigilance by the Moderators would quickly put this to a stop.

agreed!

You bring up a good point. To a new user who comes in, notices the Elites, and reads whatever-it-is that says that Elite is a special status only for top members who deserve to be recognized by the administrators, it's somewhat confusing to see one Elite blatantly neffing, another Elite flaming away, and another Elite creating threads that would be locked ordinarily because of their nef potential and general pointlessness.

I personally don't really have a problem with it -- as Red said, we've all got our roles (notice the spelling :p) to play, and the Elites that I know of (certainly seen several in this thread that I've never seen before -- I don't hang out in GH or DC!) are pretty irreplacable in that regard IMHO. OT just wouldn't be the same without them and their own special styles.

How about some sort of response from the powers that be?

I agree with most people here, especially the last 3 posts (especially pulse8's)

At this time no changes are going to be implemented. This discussion is now closed
