WARNING!!! do NOT move to Maryland (this is a long one)

I recently moved to Maryland to be with my boyfriend(he's an AT member):p I never knew love would be so much trouble.
Anyway...I just bought a 'new' car before moving up, there was no way my poor little pick-up truck was going to make the haul. :( So all is well, I'm very happy with my car...I finally got my Subaru! :D I've wanted one for several years but just haven't been able to afford one. Before pulling up my roots in Indiana I withdrew some money from the bank. I knew I had a paycheck coming in the mail in about a week and I had some checks out that hadn't cleared so I didn't want to close out my account. Silly me, I should have known better.
About a week later my check arrives I had just spent the last of my money and the 'parent inlaws' had given us a little cash when they were down a few days prior so that worked out pretty good. Now the trouble was I had no way of cashing my check. :frown:
So I set off to open an account here in the lovely State of Maryland <---hint of sarcasm ;) I drive down to the bank and WHAT??? I couldn't open an account because I didn't have a Maryland drivers license.
OK, that makes sense.
So I head off to the MVA to get my drivers license. NO line...this can't be right, something must be wrong  "I'm sorry, you need two forms of identification and two items to prove you live in the state." I had to ID's, no problem on those but I didn't have anything on the list of about 25 different things you could use to show proof of residency...W2form, rent agreement, utility bill etc. Well $hit!!! I didn't have any of these things, all the bills are in my boyfriends name and I haven't gotten a job yet. Well maybe I'll get home and I'll have some mail with my forwarding address label on it...that was one of the items on the list! NOPE, no mail for Smokey today :(
Then it hit me....the light bulb lit up and was as bright as the sun!....my paycheck from my old job had my new address on it! and I had about a month earlier received a card from one of the schools I'd applied too. That had my address on it too!!! I was saved! I had my check...but where in the world had that card gotten too? I searched the office, searched the kitchen table, looked in all the stacks of papers I could find...back to the office. I knew it was in there. That's the last place I'd seen it...:)...there it was!
I was off once more.
WOW!!! My picture is actually good! :) Now open the bank account and I'm in business.
Next on the list of things to do in order to become a resident of this lovely state...get the car inspected...no worries...sweet... everything was go except the window tint. :disgust: "You need to go to the MVA and have them check it and bring the paper back to me and I'll sign your inspection paper and you'll be set...I'm sure the tint will be ok." YEAH RIGHT!!! Who are you kidding! "Let me call and see when they can look at it, they only do it on certain days, Mondays and Wednesdays and only from 8:30 till 10:00." Figures, and my boyfriend had taken off today, Friday, so he could get his new drivers licenses made at the same time and save a trip down.
So that brings us to today, Monday, June 18, 2001. At 9:00am we head down to the MVA. The state trooper checks the tint and wouldn't you know it, it's too dark. I was pissed!!! :| It all had to come off
OK, how in the hell do you get window tint off? Well we had a number of people offer suggestions...Rain X, hair dryer, GooGone and hot soapy water. Luckily it peeled off rather easily with the aid of a raiser blade. The hard part was getting the glue off. We tried a number of things including GooGone and the hot soapy water in combination with the raiser blade. That was all fine and good for the side windows but what about the back glass, the one with defroster in/on it? I didn't want to run a blade across it and kill it in the process, I was already pissed because I had to take it off to begin with. I got to thinking....what about rubbing alcohol? Well I'll be! It worked like a charm!
So, to all of you who are planning to move to Maryland or any other state, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into!
And to anyone who has the misfortune of having to remove window tint just remember rubbing alcohol is your friend.
Sorry this has gone on forever...but I just had to get it off my chest! I feel much better now.
Thanks for listening.
Smokey :)

You could get ray lewis to whack that Trooper. One of the perks of living in a state where a murdering thug neanderthal can pull down millions a year AND be cheered.

No, you're not allowed in PA. At least not until I find a job. Once I find a nice secure job then you're allowed in :D

BTW, my sister lives in maryland....it seems like a nice place.

SmokeyTheBear,
Actualy I was wondering how you took that stuff off. A friend of mine had bought a car from out of state. I live in MN and they don't allow tint on the front windows and windshield. So we had to take it off and it looked like crap. But now we know how to take it off. Thanks for the tip. And Good luck in Maryland.

I'm in montgomery county, and I'll one-up you two: my father works for the county executive.

MD isnt really that bad-I actually have a story of crappy buracracy (sp?) too, but I'm pretty sure this is the type of thing that could happen anywhere....

my story: when I turned 16, my parents convinced me that getting a "rookie driver" magnet/bumper sticker (as part of a program MVA was trying to push) would be a good idea. It probably would have been a terrible idea-since people tend to believe that "rookie" (read: new, idiot, etc) drivers should not be on the road, but anyways, I decided to ask for one of the stickers. So I walk up to the counter as I recieve my license and I ask them for one of the yellow rookie driver stickers, currently sitting in a large stack behind the guy..."i'm sorry, these are only for people with learner permits-licensed drivers can't participate in the program".

After that, my dad was talking to some guy who is connected with the MVA, and he told him my story-the guy got my dad a sticker, but by then I'd realized it would be a huge mistake to actually put it on my car.

Anyways-I'm obviously biased, but, from what I understand, montgomery county has been doing a pretty good job. If you feel the need to challenge that, I'm sure I could get my dad to provide some data-but for now, especially since I'm dead tired and need some sleep, take my word on it :)

You have a good handle to live in the Peoples Republic of Maryland. They love cops over there, I swear 40% of the residents are cops all out on the beltway looking to generate revenue.

No, I don't like guns!

Frederic County, and I'm sure I'll get hit with taxes today when I go back to finally get my car registered! But this time I'm ready!

Wolfie- glad I could offer someone some help. That stuff is a major pain to take off and that's why after everything else I was so pissed about it! I'm just glad I didn't pay to have it put on.

I said in the beginning this was a long one....I guess I just got carried away. Things are just a little different here that back home. I've moved to KY and then back to IN and never had this much trouble becoming a resident. It's just been a week from hell trying to get this stuff taken care of.

you should move to tennessee. They are giving out drivers licenses to anyone and everyone. We have illegal immigrants coming from all corners of the U.S. now. Actually you do not even have to live here, just know someone that does. Its a mess I tell you.
