Warm? PowerDVD XP 4.0 for $4 at NewEgg

This was one of the random items that appeared on their front page. It's $4, plus $7 shipping, but I figure that if you're getting any other items, you could throw it in your cart for a negligible shipping difference. I'm told it's pretty good DVD software, I use WinDVD myself, as it came free with my video card.

powerdvd is really good. great for loading files and stuff manually. 6 speaker support for my gtxp doesn't hurt either.

nice price too.

i still dont see how this could be legal though unless theyre selling it with some hardware, it cant be OEM alone
 
On version 3.0, the difference between the retail and the OEM version is the OEM only has 2 channel stereo while the full version is has dolby surround and 4 channel support. I don't know if the 4.0 version has these same limitations. If you go to their website, you will see that 4.0 is sold as a 2 channel version (which I might see as the OEM version). Here is a link to their website with the ability to purchase added features, (audio packs). Near the bottom you will see there is reference to the 2 channel version of Power DVD 4.0, which might be this model at newegg. They want 39.95 to upgrade 2-channel ver 4.0 to the Dolby surround and Dolby ll, DTD model. Doesn't seem worth it for 11 if you need to spend 40 more to get a full version. I received a full version of 3.0 in my Guillemot-Maxi Muse sound card purchase (4 channel card) for 19.95 at CompUsa a couple months ago. It has Dolby surround and 4 speaker support but no Dolby ll or DTS.

Yeah, the shipping is ridiculous on it..It's probably only good if you're buying something else and you throw it in your cart with it. I really doubt it would raise the shipping much, if at all.

Naw, that is for older versions. I think with 4.0 it might be missing some of the audio packs like DTS, but I'm pretty sure all the OEM versions DO have 5.1 dolby which is more important anyway IMHO.
 
The retail standard and deluxe versions have Dolby digital and dolby prologic ll. The Deluxe version.has DTS and SRS. comparison chart

It doesn't says exactly what the OEM's have as features. It probably depends what drive from what company is willing to pay for featues on the included OEM software. The following link mentions that the OEM bundled version 4 can purchase seven different audio packs. It says on the last pack that "If you have a 2-channel version of PowerDVD XP 4.0, you can now have all the advanced audio features available on the Deluxe version". Also the two packs above the last one state that the benefit of the pack "Includes: Dolby Pro Logic II & Dolby Digital audio features". This seems to me that most of the OEM's are two channel.

selling or buying oem version software alone is not legit.
what's the point of buying such oem version software?
and it could have less feature than the regular version.
if you want some software at almost 0 cost, you should download from ...

Other Newegg customers, please share your experiences. I've always been charged separate shipping charges even when I order a CPU with Cooling Fan/Heatsink.

One time, some 3 months ago, I was charged separately for two items which supposedly should've came in two separate boxes/tracking numbers, NEWEGG shipped in a single/same envelope. Something's gotta change with demented shipping policies pretty soon.

Still I stick with the StinkingEgg on items such as CPU, and order other items from elsewhere (ie Cooling Fans) especially for quantities greater than four.

PowerDVD is great, been using it for a while now. Like it better than WinDVD which came with my Vaio. Got PowerDVD w/ my Liteon, Dunno whether it's OEM or Retail, shows up as Dolby Digital thru Coax Digital.
 
I just purchased retail 16X Liteon DVD player for $42 from Newegg. It came with PowerDVD XP 4.0 OEM. OEM supports 2 channel audio only. Upgrading to other audio packages are fairly expensive.
 
As I recall, the shipping charege will not be reduced if you order other items with it. You pay the shipping charege for each item as listed.

 
In defense of Newegg, to ship a package, even a CD that weighs less than one lb would around 4.50 to CA for me and around 5.20 back to NY if I had been the shipper. I couldn't get the exact number because the Fedex rate finder wasn't working for me. Fedex ground is a little cheaper but Newegg uses Fedex three day exclusively, unless you want faster shipping, then it's more. So, 6.95 for a single, light item is not an unreasonable charge since they won't use the US post office. I do agree with the others who commented that the shipping becomes cumulative in many of their orders, which in my opinion borders on being ripped off. They do give you the choice of seeing the charges before you order, so they are at least upfront about their "shipping/handling" charges. It's your choice whether to buy or not.
 
PowerDVD is the best. I've tried them all and I always go back to PowerDVD. If you have the ATI TV Wonder VE card, get PowerVCR. You'll be amazed at how much better the picture looks as opposed to using the ATI software that came with the card. They have a downloadable 30 day demo with limited use so try it out before you buy.
 
Re: the shipping charges at Newegg...

My experience has been that if you order two or three items, the shipping tends to just be the sum of all the separate shipping charges. That doesn't feel too good.

OTOH, if you order a number of items, it seems that they start to compute a "combined" shipping charge. I bought most of the parts for a new PC build a while back and the shipping came to around $18, which was probably less than half of the separate item amount.

My recommendation: try to combine several items into your order. I've buddied up with friends at work to place orders and the shipping is definitely less.

Overall, I think Newegg rocks!

 
Anyone try PowerVCR? That program is AWESOME! It turns your PC with a TV card into a Tivo. I use it to tape all of my fav shows now 🙂
 
Wow, this is a hot deal. I think I'll buy some a 512mb stick of Dane-Elec. DDR RAM, and this. Shipping is still a question though (I haven't added them to my cart yet).
 
serious, they dont consolodate on shipping :| if you bought 10 video cards w/ $10 shipping each, guess what, $100 shipping charge :|:|:|:|
 
grrr. I usually like powerDVD, but I have found that i cant play each channel separately (very useful for viewing overseas VCD's). How could they leave out this basic feature? Boo.
