I certainly believe that some of the reported problems are due to set-up deficiencies. But I'm pretty convinced that there are many boards with real problems. There are many folks that systematically upgraded their K7S5A rigs with top of the line 400 Watt power supplies, name brand memory, etc., that came to the conclusion that their board was bad. Many of these same folks eliminated their problems by exchanging their boards or by applying the resistor fix.

I do agree that this board has bropught out many newbies. I'm in the process of assembling my first PC and the K7S5A is still my motherboard of choice, despite all the cautions that I'm listing here.

<< That said, the reason so many people have 'trouble' is often related to their configuration. You can't expect to throw in a generic 250w supply with old generic RAM and a Socket 7 heatsink/fan and expect it to work. Although, apparently, some people get lucky :D

The low price of this board has brought out all the newbies -- and they're making mistakes.

I have had nothing but grief with this sorry *ss motherboard. I bought it 2 months ago from newegg, so now I'm stuck with it.
Upgraded to AMD approved 350w PS, different OS's, several reformats and reinstalls and finally I see all the problems
listed at OCWorkbench. Now I know why I have had so many unexplained problems. Also check out all the complaints
at the ECS knowledgebase forums, over 1600. No other ECS MB has even 1/4 of the posts.
Here's an example: Forum
I do not believe that I should have to solder resistors on a new MB to make it work. ECS has a major screwup here.
:disgust:
I have a 1.4 retail Tbird
256 Micron
WD 20G 7200
Radeon AIW 32M
SB Live 5.1
Enermax 350w PS

Inexpirenced Builder here
Less than 5 so far;), after waying my options I chose to build 3 different PCs with the K7S5A

1. 1GHZ 266 Chip +2 Crucial DDR Dimms +Antec 3000w (rock solid going on 1 month, my rig)

2. Xp1600 + 2 Crucial DDR Dimms +Enlight 300W (been running Memtest,UD, and loops of Prime95 and 3Dmark2K1 for approx 72 hrs)

3. 1.2GHZ 266 Chip +2 Crucial DDR Dimms+ Enlight 340W (rock solid since Oct 1)

trick is read up on your purchase!!!

After doing all my research I decided to avoid crappy PSU, crappy ram, 1.4 T-birds

for 57$ I can do that (which I had planned on anyhow)

YMMV

i don't work for ecs, so i have no reason to support them but i've built about 9 systems with the k7s5a so far with no problems whatsoever besides the stupid two pin power LED connector. here are a sample of configurations:

xp 1600+, 512mb crucial ddr, enermax 300w, visiontek gf2gtsv
tbird 1.4c, 512mb crucial ddr, enermax 300w, asus v7100m
duron 750, 256mb generic sdram, generic 300w, asus v7100pro
duron 750, 256mb mushkin ddr, generic 300w, viper v770

pretty much no problems at all, except for the fact that the board has a strong nasty odor to it, but other than that, no problems. all systems have been installed with xp, and the only driver that i needed to install was the SiS sound driver. only two of the boards i used were the newer boards that had the little XP sticker, the others did not...

Just got my deal at Frys tonight, boxed AMD 1.4GHz with the MB, $149. I am going to build it tomorrow. Can I use the Antec 300w case on-sale at BB ($49.99 after mIR)?

No Frys here ( Atlanta ) . A couple of local clone shops in the Norcross clone computer row have this mobo or its Amptron SIS735 based " cousin" for $64-69 + sales tax . In my case it may be better to buy local unless I can get a hot deal on a motherboard / processor .

Do you have the sku# for that combo handy? All I've seen advertised in the Oregonian is a 950 and that board for $119.

Re: Case noise

Would you consider it excessive noise? If it is, you could replace the fan, or look around for some Dynamat to install in your case.

I'm sure not every K7S5A is bad, but if you care about the data integrity of your files, I would strongly recommend
downloading and running Memtest86
You could have problems that don't always show up right away. I tried it on three different computers with various MBs, the only
one that showed problems (a bunch!) was my K7S5A!

Went to a computer fair today, this board was talk of the town, all vendors had em... $58 bucks cash, $60 cc.
Not all the talk was good though. Just my 2 :D
