This looks good, if I didn't have a modded XBox with a 120GB drive, I would go for this. As it is, I hooked my XBox into my network and stream DiVX movies from my home server to my entertainment center with the XBox.

my XBOX IS my home server :) What I like about it is that it plays quicktime and Real too :)
(and plays games too)

quick question, will this play MP3's, DivX, and XviD that are burned onto DVD-R's? Or only CD-R's?

"quick question, will this play MP3's, DivX, and XviD that are burned onto DVD-R's? Or only CD-R's?"

I believe that the answer to your question is that this will play anything a recently purchased Lite-On DVD ROM in your computer would play. Since I have not attempted to play any of those on mine I couldn't say for sure, but I believe it would and does play them all regardless what they are recorded on, with the notable exception of an HD BURN CD disc. That's one reason why I'm waiting.

IMHO, I really don't see the advantage in this player, other than the fact that its already built for you. With the custom player you could install all codecs (like FFDshow) and not just watch Divx/Xvid only.

I am going to call you onto the carpet on this one...

Lets see....

$ 40.00 for a cheap or used ATX case. (hopefully with PSU)
$ 50.00 for at least a cheap TV Out, good quality Directx 9 Video card (possibly and Ati-All-in-Wonder)
$ 40.00 for a used or new DVD-R that will play all of the formats
$ 35.00 for at least 256 megs of ram (maybe 25.00 used) to run the OS
$ 20.00 for cheapo used 20.0 gig harddrive
$ 60.00 for used CPU\motherboard combo, presumably and Athlon XP solution (hopefully it comes with HSF)
$ 50.00 for perhaps (just to be legal) Windows 2000 license....

Now lets add labor,
-If you are blessed, it will take 20 minutes to 2 hours to put the system together, another hour to
install OS (harddrive format then OS files copied, then reboot then OS installed then reboot)
-It should take another hour to update the OS and install all of the DiVX and Mpeg 4 codecs
-It should then take another 20 minutes to move the big lug (cheapo cases are big... not SFF or HSF) case then connect the unit.
That sounds like about 5 hours of work to me... and if I go by what most techs could charge, lets say a minimun of $50.00 an hour... welllllllll $250.00 for labor...

Now some other luxuries that will be needed...

$40.00 ATI remote wonder (or pay $75.00 above and substitue video out card with ATI AIW 7500)
$50.00 for wireless keyboard mouse combo...

we have a grand total of
$635.00
WOW.... sounds like some custome made system to me... and it looks ugly sitting next to my entertainment center in "el-cheap" vanilla case... Plus it takes me 10 minutes to boot the sucker, then login to Windows, then place the DVD in the drive and play them....

WOW... $140.00 Liteon looks good right now... in fact it looks awesome!!!

Guess what, I have the exact same system that I mentioned, above... except my parts are higher quality...
And it cost me a ton of money... to put it together, but for what its worth... I can at least play BF1942 on it...

Of course we could subtract the $250.00 for labor and still would have a nice $385.00 DVD player... which still is a little extreme considering most of us probably have $500.00 receivers or less...

One more thing... most everybody knows that 90% of the illegally distributed movies and TV episodes out on the net encode in some form of Mpeg 1(VCD) Mpeg 2(SVCD) or DiVX or Mpeg4. SO there really is not a need for RM...or even QT...

And I'll let you all know how .avi's look on my X1 projector after I get too ;)

Thanks to my wife, I don't have such problems. I guess it is another reason to get married, you stop worring what to buy. It simplifies life quite a bit. If I want to buy something I have to go trough process of convincing and trust me I don't want to do it often.

LOL.... you know it is the other way around for me... I buy what I want..... She can't stop me, she can only hope to outbuy me.

wish it could be networked to play video on the file server remotely. otherwise, it's a pain to burn so many CDRs... and most movies only need to be watched once. it's wasting CDR/DVDR. Well CDRW is too slow to burn.

Well I really wanted one of these since my POS Apex DVD player won't play burned DVD's.
I would be using my Lite-On DVD ROM as a player now except that my computer is in another room. So I have this old unused PCI video card that I'm going to put in my current computer and hook the monitor up to it. Then I'm hooking up a VGA to S-Video to RCA adapter to the AGP card in the computer and running RCA cables from the computer to the TV and stereo in another room. (I only have one S-Video connector on my TV, which is already in use, if you were wondering why I wouldn't use it). So for < $40 I'm basically going to have one of these but without the luxury of a remote control which won't bother me too much anyway. And I suppose I should be able to flash my Lite-On with the latest firmware as it becomes available.

BTW- If you already have a video card with TV Out this can be done for even less.

The website still shows OOS.
Hopefully they have enough to fill the backorder AND put more out on the shelves.

Regarding the Xbox, I wonder if the PS2 is adaptable. This presents quite a dilemma in terms of which route to take, DVD player or Console.

Thanks

The pricks at PCClub have raised the price now to $149.99.

"Hey, we're getting tons of orders on these and can hardly fill them. Let's RAISE the price! By Christmas we'll have filled the orders, but hey...at least we'll get more money from them now."

I was on the fence about ordering this, but with all of the delays and now the price raise, they've made up my mind for me.

Pass.

I have never heard of a firmware image adding that much capability. Considering the image only holds 6 MB's, unless someone is an assembly language coding genius, there is no way you can squeeze that many features into it. Most firmware hacks for DVD's, PC's or home players, are for removing the region restrictions and nothing else.

well seeing that the firmware downloads off the site are simply just cd-images, it seems future hacking of the lvd-2001's firmware is inevitable. adding support for ogg, ac3, divx ;-), real media, quicktime, wmv, and a galore of other video and audio formats wont be that far behind (that is of course WHEN someone decides to take a crack at changing the firmware)

but looks to be a very promising dvd player at the front of a whole new generation of divx/xvid supporting players that will be coming out soon

It seems that if you have it shipped it's $139.99, but if you pick it up in the store (at least my store -- Monrovia, CA), it's $149.99.

Divx and avi playback is a nice feature but so often downloaded files of these types have dropped frames or otherwise corrupted segments. Now if there were reasonbly priced websites where you could pay to download movies that were on their servers and not peer to peer or uploaded to newsgroups then they might have a service worth paying to use. Of course if you're vreating your own divx files that's different. I'm holding out for a little while in hopes of seeing players that support Sanyo's new HD BURN. Meanwhile if someone would like to give me an Onkyo DVSP800 I'll take it. I'll be adding Lite-On's player to my list to consider. Thanks for posting about this player.

I have a Sony DVD player that won't even play AUDIO CD's that are on CD-R's. And it's only a year old too. There's no excuse for that. :|

Other standards including (X)VCD, (X)SVCD, MP3 etc are nice but Divx - sorry not for not small TV.

Um yeah... Most likely you have a bad quality rip. I watch divx encoded movies on my 21" CRT and it is VERY hard to tell it's not running straight off a DVD. Your problem is with something other than divx.
