If it weren't for Trials of Atlantis and New Frontiers, I would probably still be playing DAoC. Even though they sucked at balancing classes (Wizards/Theurgists/Armsman especially).

Oh I had fun too. Hell, look at my username. :) MOOOOOOOSE!!!!

But it was fun despite the design. Being a class like Cleric (healing, armor, dmg spells, yippee) or a stealther (critical shot while invis) or running with a couple mezzers you couldn't help but have fun. But just fall in with a random group or play an unfavored class and run out into the frontier and see how fun it is. Ever play a melee character in a keep defense.....oh boy was that fun.

Which is kinda critical for a game billed as having a PvP/RvR end game. They never even came close to balancing things. As I said, it looked like they took a PvE engine and flipped a switch to make everything work against players. It looked like what it was.....lazy design....and that was proven by their ineffectual attempts at fixing things.

My favorite PvP was Shadowbane. Then again, what you had there was a game actually built around PvP and it showed. Which is why I can call out Mythic.

That said, I'll say about DAOC that the animations were the best I've ever seen in an MMO. Those special skills they added at different levels were nice. RvR was a great idea. Darkness Falls was freaking brilliant. The horses were a great compromise between instant travel and walking everywhere. WoW straight ripped off 80% of that game or more, but people don't even realize.

I Loved DAOC. Minus ToA. I think DAOC was best when Darkness Falls was introduced. After that it got to much focused on PvE needed to be better in RvR/pvp.

I played it for 4 years, had the highest realm rank Animist on all servers, first Lone Enforcer animist, etc. I quit simply because of ALL the pve content..you only found the same people in rvr every night because of the 1500-2000 people on the server. %75 or more was in ToA pveing. :(

Warhammer is my next MMO, you just can't find a MMO out there currently that is popular and has a good pvp system. Eve could of been my pvp game except the training is not my cup of tea.

Btw, in case you did not know, EVERY MMO on the market has had stuff cut before it was put out..even WoW. Expansion packs are just that, expansions on what was suppose to be in the game...ever notice when a MMO is first put out you find parts of the game that look like it should "be part of something"? portal stone sitting in middle of no were..or a big hole in the ground that just ends..that was planned content..just not enough time.

They said early on in WoW development that many of the Developers were avid DAOC players.

I didnt think New Frontiers was a bad addition to the game, however it was too little too late. I was on the beta team for SI and TOA and on the forums we were screaming that the PvE grind isnt what the players were here for... Not to mention the 60+ bugs i reported that all went live (whats the point of beta again?)

That being said, Darkness falls is hands down the most fun ive ever had in an MMO.

I was actually looking forward to WHO due to not having had any meaningful pvp since I quit playing DAOC about 3 years ago. I never really liked the free for all world pvp that most of the mmo's I tried after DAOC offered.

I still visit the private message board for the DAOC server I played on because the whole "realm vs. realm" concept forced the whole realm to get together and really forged a sense of server wide community. The closest thing I see these days to that is with large guilds but thats just not the same imo.

I ultimately left DAOC because I enjoyed the pvp aspect of the game but had no desire to continue the pve grind. Before TOA all you had to do was hit 50, run a couple of quests, get your player made spellcrafter gear and you were gtg. Then it was just a matter of being part of a regular pvp group.

TOA pretty much ruined the simplicity of being competitive in pvp. Then they added new frontiers, which made the whole pvp arena way too massive for the populations on the servers and it was harder to find good fights be they 8 vs. 8, 1 vs. 1, or whatever.

At this point I am not sure I will try out WHO. I honestly think that I just don't have the time to put into an mmo anymore. It was fun to log on for a bit before class in college but the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a computer screen for hours on end after having done that for 10-12 hours at work.

As a final thought, I will say that if a company out there is capable of creating an entertaining and meaningful pvp centric game I think mythic can do it. The question to me is will the economics, company politics, and shortsighted thinking of the decision makers allow them to do that.

Or without one of WoW's fanboy coming in to say that <insert game here> sucks compared to WoW. Too many bloody WoW players get wet just thinking about the game, it is so sickening, they are the main reason so many people quit that game. I would be afraid to admit if I played WoW because people like them give gamers a bad name.

Back to Warhammer, I would not worry so much. If it is like any other game with a good and evil side, there are essentially only healers, tank, caster and scouts which are then split up into good and evil with different names/skills and a few hybrids that are a mixture of those 4 classes.

I hope there are cities beyond the capitals though. That is what I assumed here, the capical city will be a heavily fortified city that no one would ever be able to take over whereas there are other smaller cities that are up for the taking.

Darkness Falls was hilarious. You could attack the vendors, have all out wars with other realms, and laugh your ass off watching people run up the ramps trying to escape the mob kill train. LOL those were great times.

Indeed...early on I could take my level 50 minstrel, stealth over to the noob side and annihilate like 20 people in a one fell swoop....then they would bring the big guns in and I'd log out on the spot....LAWL.

I remember soloing my Healer the last few levels to 50 on the Succubus ramp. At the time I'm pretty sure I was the only pure trispec healer on Igraine, and I'd always draw a crowd around me as shocked players saw me chain pulling the imps and succubus. They'd all be thinking "poor crazy healer, healer's can't solo!" And down goes another orange con mob.

That said, I tried full pac and full mending spec healers, and they couldn't solo greens. Full aug was okay to solo, but not nearly as effective as they didn't have the "get out of jail free" instas to work with. I remember copying myself to the test server and dueling pure aug healers, as they would die in disbelief. Same with pure pac healers.

Oh those were the days.

That was what was annoying about ToA, they invested so much into it, but even admitted it was poorly introduced part of the game. I never understood how come game developers would be flat out hard headed in not listening to player base. I bet DAOC would be still very popular today if it was not for that single expansion. In its mature phase DAOC servers had around 3k players per server. After ToA was released..6 months later they announced clustering servers. Of course they said it was to make it so more people could RvR, but everyone knew it was because ToA drained mass portions of the game.

This is my "fear" of Warhammer..they will no doubt have expansions to War..but what kind. If the follow the same route as with DAOC..pve exp after another..thats not good at all.

Think about it, daoc ONLY pvp/rvr "expansion" given was New frontiers..that is sad for a game tounted as RvR warfare. Darkness Falls was not really a pvp/rvr expansion..considering most servers it was lopsided that one realm controlled it %90 of the time before they made it open..after toa.

I loved the game while it lasted, but could of lasted a lot longer.

First thing that came to my mind is, "that sucks." Then second, "they're probably doing this so they can sell this excluded content as an expansion later." Then thirdly... "I don't play MMOs anyway."

2004 was a disasterous year for DAOC. TOA wore people thin then they introduced NF which coupled with TOA turned a lot of people off of the game. I think that Summer Mythic saw a huge drop in players as people quit waiting for WoW. Nearly everybody in my rvr guild quit by the end of July including myself.

The trifeca of TOA, NF, and WOW sealed their doom. How they have managed to hold on another 4 years is amazing imo.

If EVE has 100 perfectly balanced classes then I'm Jesus dual wielding wrecking balls and flying through the air on my magic dolphin while a team of midgets sings my theme song.

For some odd reason, the imagery made me LOL.

Posted because I'm sure the second thought is their motivation for pulling the content. It's EA.. they're notorious for dozens of expansions and now microtransactions.

While this is a WHO thread, I noticed a lot of old DAoC players in here - hit up camelot herald and vote on their new poll. They're talking about introducing a new server type which will do away with anything after DF and revert told school DAoC with a universal buff system. Sounds sick if they can pull it off.

Sounds great, but starting from scratch again? Screw that. Some of the people on the Warhammer Boards over at IGN had a good idea that they should bundle DAoC with Warhammer when it comes out.

Starting out from scratch in DAoC is easy-peasy now ... it's having to contend with uber-1337 RvR guilds that's a bitch.

I'm still hoping they decide to put the classes in and just fix them later. I'm not looking forward to starting over when my class becomes available (I'm probably in the minority here)

I fired up Lotro after I'd had enough of AoC and I've found it's actually enjoyable if you don't mind the slower pace of the game overall

DAOC was the best MMO that I have ever played. With that said, I'd never go back to it and it did go downhill pretty badly several years ago. Once WoW came out, I played it for a while, then I played LOTRO, which also was decent, but they just didn't capture me like DAOC did.

I have so many fond memories of DAOC. In fact, DAOC redone with a new interface, new graphics would be pretty cool IMO. I liked the classes, I liked the weapons and I really liked the graphics. The people were mature, generally, and was just one of those great games that I don't think will ever come again.

I think each person has their own favorite MMO that can't be replaced. For me, this was DAOC.
