EQ1 had 16 and EQ2 has 24 if I'm not mistaken.
DAoC has 45 classes ... nothing compares to it
and it was never balanced
that said, daoc was a lot of fun until toa and nf showed up. mythic just couldn't figure out that all 90% of its players wanted was a level 50 battleground, which we fashioned ourselves out of emain. unfortunately, the fact that there would be 100s of albs and mids hanging around in emain all the time, combined with the fact that hibernia was a crappy realm, meant that the hibs never had any chance at the game.
then they dropped grind-fest overpowering toa on us, then they turned rvr into a crappy siege fest with nf. in 6 months they turned a somewhat flawed but fun game into a giant steaming pile.
i really do miss ninjaing keeps in midgard with a group of 7 paladins and a minstrel. "wtf? why didn't we get any guard spam that our keep was about to fall?"
i think the most fun i ever had with an mmorpg was in UO. buggy as hell but that just added to it. and i still think the skill system was better than crappy leveling (we have computers, we can calculate minute skill improvements in real time, we don't need pen and paper levels anymore!). you want to do more damage? pick up a sword and start using it, you get better. want to be a better spell caster? get some reagents and start practicing. no allocating skill points or just spending money at a trainer.
