Used to. Played Nids until 4th then met my current wife. She took all my money and free time...and now my kid saps up the change. I'm ok with it though. Last time I played, too many people have yet to discover the wonders of a shower. And a razor. And sunlight.

I only wish it was a stereotype...

lol So true. Last time I went into a store the guy working there dropped a gas bomb in the middle of the store and he must have been a hardcore vegan because it smelled like something crawled up in his ass and died. hahah

I sold my Legion of the Damned army on eBay several years ago, but I do still play Blood Bowl on my pc. They're good games, just not very useful for things like getting laid and having a life.

Buy whatever you like.

I still play 40k. Its a fun enough hobby and I get a game or two every week. Got two armies right now(Space Marines and Imperial Guard), and I'm considering a fantasy dwarves army.

Even WITH a job, shit is expensive though.

i used to play 40k before it went all cashgrab, mostly space marines vs orcs, 1:3 ratio, 2 players and a GM. heavily modded.
then the modding got so heavy it was my own game. then i got laid and i lost interest.
vagina is one hell of a drug.

Sure is, I'll let you in on something you'll pick it up again once all your friends have wives and children that are not infants any longer. For my friends and I it was pen & paper rpgs. We all pretty much stopped playing them from early 20 to late 40 then picked them up again.

I play lots of wargames, but anything games workshop is the worst. Overpriced as hell, bad rules, codex creep, etc. Great art, but its design to suck out of the noobs and has a very quick cycle to force experienced players to keep spending.

do you know of any good systems for fantasy or space?

something that has well thought out rules that are not afraid to be complicated?

like maybe early warhammer or fantasy warlord

I like warmachine/hordes a lot more for a fantasy type game in the same vein as warhammer. Though its more steampunk that outright fantasy. Still great art, lots of players and the publisher isn't a dick.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for.
Do you like 28mm (warhammer) sized models? Smaller models generally means cheaper models and larger armies. (And the groud scale doesn't get so fucked up.)
Do you like squad based games, or do you want massive armies on the table? Some games every unit is unique and important. Others its a clash of the masses.
When you say space, do you mean ship battles, or more like 40k? My first choice if I were to do space themed like 40k is infinity.

Funny you say that. I'm turning 42 this year. I used to play a lot of P&P RPGs, Battletech, Car Wars, and a good collection of board games but stopped playing about 15 years ago. Two years ago we started playing board games again, having a monthly board game get together with two other couples. Word got out and more people wanted to join our board game nights, and now it is split into two groups each with about 20 people, and last time we started talking about RPGs and Wargames and so many people were interested that I'm thinking about splitting the group again and starting a RPG/Car Wars/Battletech night.

Baseball cards use to come with a stick of gum. Maybe Magic the Gathering cards should come with a stick of soap.

Is shaving really necessary though? Lots of wargamers I knew had beards, none of them had BO.

Grooming is necessary. Beards are cools...hell, all kinds of facial hair is cool. I wish I could grow one but my employer says no beyond a mustache. But when you look like you crawled out of an afgan cave after 7 years of combat, thats where I draw the line. At least make an effort...

how good is traveler?

2nd edition is good but i think that 3.0 and 3.5 and pathfinder work simpler and yet more powerful

i have no experience in traveller, other than reading the rulebook once of the first ed. i guess you can't keep up with everything .. also, i owned space opera (horribly broken ruleset) so i wasn't interested in scifi rpgs..
i also tend to believe that ultra-modern settings dont lend themselves to rpgs, because its too hard to pose a problem to the pplayers and too easy for them to resolve them.
i like gritty, mud, stench and fatigue. it works better for rpgs, imho.

Never got into the mini tabletop gaming until recently. I've got a full on addiction for the X-wing miniature system from Fantasy Flight Games. It's fast, fun and has a lore to it that is very familiar to most people.

I used to play Warhammer 40k but sold off all my stuff 5 or so years ago which was all imperial guard. I don't even know why I played that army, there was so much to paint and not only was I not good at painting I hated doing it.

I would avoid Games Workshop, that company is greedy as hell. They completely screw people over on the rule changes, what was powerful in the edition before now stinks and you gotta buy all new stuff to have a competitive army. They charge way too much money for their figures and the profit margins they give to the hobby shops is close to jack squat.

I can't wait till 3D printers start chopping away at GWs insane markup profit.

because having a giant army of tanks and guys with guns is cool to look at and relatable to the GI-Joe of your youth.

this hoth themed army is pretty badass too.
