Don't worry if you can't get into the beta test now... everyone will be a beta tester after its release!
(/tongue in cheek)

There's always a patch released within two weeks of a Blizzard game so the beta testers don't always catch all of the bugs. Don't get me wrong, I liked Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft like the next gamer but it's the same with any game: rush it out the door today, we'll support it tomorrow.

tenchim, even after the Diablo 2 thing I still consider Blizzard one of the better companies at releasing bug-free games. Nobody's perfect but Blizzard runs circles around some companies.

<< it'll be out in warez within a couple days of it's release...
>>

It's Battle.net only...you won't be able to play it even if you get your greedy hands on it :)

I can't believe people are ragging on Blizzard...they've put out some of the best games in history.

Finally somebody with a brain. Have a look at the games around these days. We see tons of excellent ones - but they're almost all buggy. Look at Half Life for example. How many peopple have never seen a crash? I don't think ANYONE hasn't seen at least one. Have Blizzard's games ever crashed or gone weird on you? Not for me. I've played Warcraft, Warcraft II, Diablo, Starcraft and Diablo II (probably others I'm not remembering, too), and I have never seen any one of those games mess up - and starcraft being the most fun/favorite and easiest to install, set up, play, etc.

Blizzard's a pretty damn good company, if you ask me. As for the requirements - WTF do you expect? It's 100% normal. it's not like they've been jacked up. Starcraft requires a P90 at minimum. When Starcraft came out, the best you could buy was a 200-233MHz system, maybe 300MHz if you go all out. Didn't hear anybody complaining back then? I certianly played just fine on my Cyrix 6x86 MXPR200 and later MII-300. A P3-600 is not high end! We have 2+GHz systems today. I think 600MHz requirements are even less excessive when comparing to requirements of older games. Put things in perspective!

Perhaps those are really the recommended requirements on the boxed copy, but Blizzard wanted everyone in the beta to be able to play the game with good graphics? A beta where people run at 5 FPS won't help Blizzard out at all. The boxed copy may require something like 400-500 MHZ. Even if this proves to be false, I agree with the majority of you. 600 mhz for a gaming box isn't that fast anymore (scary huh?).

<< ok so people bitch about the minimum requirements. and then people like us bitch when they arent high enough. no wonder developers are going to consoles. >>

Amen brother. I spent my first couple paychecks at my summer job upgrading my system so I could play Tribes2 in all it's glory.

I fully expect to see a repeat of the "Tribes 2 doesn't work with my voodoo card" fiasco. If the game even runs minimally with a voodoo card, you're going to get voodoo owners buying it. And when they all bitch to Blizzard because the game won't play smoothly on their system. Hopefully, blizzard won't kill the game with a patch so voodoo owners can play the game like Sierra did for tribes2.

Love that ActiveX control thingy. That should weed out some of the people who lie about their systems and then bump legit people out of the beta.

Hell, people can get $300 rebranded E-machines that'll run the game after popping a new video card in there if they search around. Unfortunately, we're in the vast minority.. and a large portion of gamers out there have some pretty slow computers compared to today's standards. With a lil research it's not like it's hard, or even too expensive, to make a barebones gaming system.

Keeping in mind that Betas usually have higher requirements than the release version. Some aren't even as friendly as this, some REQUIRE a geforce vid card. It's a beta, the screamers should just wait.

people have been holding onto pentiums for years, without any real need to upgrade. And now they complain?

HEY YOU IDIOTS WITH SLOW COMPUTERS, IF YOU WANT TO PLAY GAMES, GET A NEW SYSTEM.

if you cant afford it, well, you cant play. get a console.

Well look at Red Faction. It takes up 1.19 gigs and its based on the Half Life engine. Single player is kinda short too.

There isn't much to see guys. You can't signup until 11PST. Here's what the site says if you really want to know:

Approximately 5,000 beta testers will be chosen randomly from the pool of qualified applicants. Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian residents and must be 13 years of age or older. Testers that are chosen to participate in the beta test will be notified by e-mail.
In the event that you are selected to beta test Warcraft® III: Reign of Chaos? (the "Product"), your use of the Product will be subject to a Beta Test License Agreement that will be contained in the Product.

We are not taking applications on a "first-come, first-serve basis." You have the same chance of getting into the beta regardless of when you decide to sign up during the one (1) week application period.

Please note that only one entry per household is permitted. Multiple entries will be disqualified.

The Warcraft® III: Reign of Chaos? beta test has the following requirements:

Your computer must be at least a Pentium III 600 (or equivalent), with 128 MB RAM or more.
Your computer must have a mouse, 400 MB of available hard drive space, a 4X CD-ROM or faster, a 32 MB 3D accelerator card with Direct3D support, a DirectX compatible 16 bit sound card, a 28.8 modem (or better) with Internet connectivity, and DirectX 8.1.
You must be running Windows 98, 98SE, 2000 (running with local Administrator privileges), ME, or XP to play the Warcraft® III: Reign of Chaos? beta on your system.
Your Internet connection must be capable of running 32-bit Windows socket applications (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer).
You must have a valid e-mail address.
In addition, please note that you will be prompted to download an ActiveX file during the registration process that will provide Blizzard with the system configuration of the computer from which you apply and intend to play the Warcraft® III: Reign of Chaos? beta. Specifically, Blizzard will only be recording CPU, RAM, operating system, video card, and sound card information from your computer. Your system configuration data will be linked with your personal registration data. The reason we are collecting this information is to make sure that we select users with a wide variety of hardware configurations that meet the minimum requirements to participate in the beta test. By submitting your application, you hereby acknowledge that the aforementioned data will be collected and grant Blizzard permission to collect such data.
If you have any questions or concerns about this procedure, please email us at support@blizzard.com.

Please click the button below to begin the application process.

<page 2>

Starting at 11:00 p.m. PST on Monday, January 7, 2002, Blizzard will begin accepting on-line applications for people interested in participating in the Warcraft® III: Reign of Chaos? beta test over Battle.net®.
Due to player feedback, we have extended the beta test sign-up period to allow more people an opportunity to apply. The signup period will now last until 11:00 p.m. PST on Friday, January 11. We will be picking the testers from those people that sign up during the signup period. Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian residents and at least thirteen (13) years of age to be eligible to enter the beta test.

The beta signup will begin on Monday, January 7th at 11:00 p.m Pacific Standard Time (GMT -8). The beta signup will end on Friday, January 11th at 11:00 p.m Pacific Standard Time (GMT -8). Following the registration period, we will randomly select 5,000 testers from the qualifed application pool based on a variety of system configurations and locations.

We are not taking applications on a "first-come first-serve basis." Provided that you and your computer meet all of the qualifications, you will have the same chance of getting into the beta test no matter when you decide to apply during the signup period.

Please note that only one (1) entry per household is permitted. Multiple entries will be disqualified.

Aside from the additional required hard drive space, the Warcraft® III: Reign of Chaos? beta test has the following system requirements:

Your computer must be at least a Pentium III 600 (or equivalent), with 128 MB RAM or more.
Your computer must have a mouse, 400 MB of available hard drive space, a 4X CD-ROM or faster, a 32 MB 3D accelerator card with Direct3D support, a DirectX compatible 16 bit sound card, a 28.8 modem (or better) with Internet connectivity, and DirectX 8.1.

Red Faction uses its own engine......or can you blow though walls in Half Life? Sheesh....

Look guys, if all computer software companies were like Blizzard, the computer gaming scene would be a better place...stop complaining about requirements for a beta test....only 5000 people are going to get in on it, so settle down..

As for the warez comments....lame

I like the mention of the ActiveX component that Blizzard runs when you want to download the beta to make sure you didn't lie in the beta application ;)

actually id be wary of that. blizzard has had their ass in the fire twice now. their battlenet client was sending out private info without users permission.
