Just got the Me 163. It's a real bomber killer if you can avoid getting hit by any defensive gunfire. Like most of the jets, it's a powerkeg that can't take much damage.

dev server notes indicate tanks will go open with next patch, probably in a month or so.

NVM, looks like it is going up tomorrow.

1.41 is basically just the addition of ground forces, they didn't do anything meaningful with their planes section. They added a few planes and added some FM fixes.

The ground forces section is interesting, MUCH less arcade-ey than WoT, which I'm perfectly ok with. They released it with bugs though, for example it's impossible to map the "use fire extinguisher" function to any key. My opinion of Gaijin is still pretty damn low, but it seems they have a good product here and I'll stick around and enjoy it until they ruin it.

Simulation Battles is the way to go with War Thunder Ground Forces IMO. If you play Arcade or Realistic, you might as well play WoT as WoT does arcade battles better (to me at least). But Sim battles are a ton of fun, in a totally different way. Everything is rendered (no invisible tanks ala WoT). Camo actually matters, as you have to actually see the target. There is no floating name above it to point it out to you. Movement or tracing back shots is great. The smoke from shooting, or the dust kicking up in front of you, makes a huge difference since there are no halo target aids.

This makes it scratch a different itch than WoT. If I want an arcade battle, I'll play WoT. If I want a more realistic tank simulation, I'll play WT Sim battles.

Tanks aren't nearly as much fun as planes IMO. Perhaps it's better than WoT, but it's not better than the air gameplay. Not by a mile.

Well that depends on what you are looking for. I only find planes mildly fun. WT Sim battles are a lot of fun. So I find myself rarely playing planes. In fact, I haven't played planes in about a week.

Continuing to play some more. Have a Tiger I and JP IV/70 now. Both are solid tanks. People say that the Tiger I is too weak in the armor department. It does have massive weak spots, but is a great long ranged sniper. The gun is good, and if you are at range they struggle to hit the weak spots and their pen is less, and I find I can bounce or take minimal damage from a lot of guns.

Something to keep in mind. German takes are VASTLY underpowered at Tiers I and II compared to Russians. The balance is actually ridiculous. I think I went 3 wins and 30 losses during those tiers, and that's not an exaggerations. However, once you start climbing into Tier III, particularly the tail end with Tigers and JP IV's, it starts to even up. So if you like German tanks, be prepared for an ugly initial grind, but it gets better.

One thing I really like about Sim battles is that it creates a lot of tension. Since you can be one shot no matter what you're driving (there are no hit points, so someone hits a weak spot or is closes enough for an auto pen, you're dead), you have to be careful. This coupled with the fact that (in Sim battles) you have to visually spot tanks without HUD clues, really rackets up the tension.

I was just in a battle where it was me vs one enemy as the only tanks left. I was trying to hunt him down. I poke around a corner and see what looks like a tank turret poking over a hill. I take a quick shot and back up real quick. I then start poking out and taking pot shots and backing up again real quick. I don't want to zoom in to make an accurate shot because I figured he's already pre aimed and taking that amount of time will just let him land a perfect shot.

After about 3 shots of doing this he hadn't returned fire. So I decide for a zoom-in, only to find out I've been firing at a pile of rocks that, at distance, looked like a tank turret :D

But this is the kind of thing that makes the game great, IMO.

I played some ground battles last night (arcade mode).
I found the following problems:
1) It is much harder to roll onto a defended cap circle in the tank game than in planes. Once you have the flag, it takes a LOT of effort to lose it and the coordination is completely lacking in pubs to pull it off.
2) Tactics are thrown out of the window on some maps. The amount of instant engagements as one turns a single corner from spawn is ridiculous. It is not even camping the enemy spawn, some maps are just action right away. Which is problematic because of...
3) The amount of one shots is frustrating. Everyone is running around with a one shot kill gun. My stupid little T26 got 6 kills in a row from .9 KM away, aiming? Nah, just hit em and they die half the time.

High point, me derping a plane with my zis 30.
Low point, me dying in spawn 3 times in a row within 10 seconds of spawning

Stupid point, when I fell over from rolling down a cliff, my tank started sliding all over the map like a skate board in a half pipe. 500m one way, slid back 500m the other. Eventually it came to rest. I was too busy laughing to think to exit my vehicle (and besides, why would I? we had the cap and were going to win without my help thanks to #1).

Some of the maps have spawns right near each other. Bad map design imo. I played one of those maps where the enemy were either sniping you as you turned the corner. Or able to drop arty right into the spawn which killed people right as they got going.

Low tier german mediums and lights do have real problems, but the stugs have great armor and the stugF and pz4f2 one-shot everything without even aiming. Saying all of tiers one and two are weak is a stretch.

I have to admit, I'm enjoying mixed battles so far. It's a lot to get used to, flying an SU2 in RB when you're used to AB, but interesting.

I landed on the aircraft carrier on my first try. I couldn't have done it without the help of the air control tower, which absorbed most of my excess speed.

Mixed matches are really fun. Finally some air combat that doesn't include climbing as high as possible.

I was playing around with the user skin files and made this, I'd have to say that this is probably considered borderline cheating, all I know is it's alot harder to shoot me down as my plane gets low on health.

I doubt the other players see you that way. If they do, there's nothing borderline about it, it's cheating.

Customs skins are only seen by you. To other players you look like an avg plane.

I read about that last night, one discussion said something about if everyone could see each others skins, and everyone was using custom files, it would be a little more than 1 gig of files that needed to be downloaded to all of the other clients per game.

Imagine what the skins would look like with some of these degenerates. Spend a night in CS Source with user made spray paint to get an idea :D

the skins are primarily for people who want historically accurate paint and markings. because of german laws gaijin removed all swastika symbols from all the german units. having the skins be client side based puts the burden/liability on the player.

a thread i was following on the WT forums about the decline in playerbase got deleted, not locked but deleted. nothing in the thread even approached contentious, but i guess a few posts were negative enough to purge the whole thing. they seem to be following the mechwarrioronline model of moderation. is this normal for mmo games?

It's my fault, a couple weeks ago I got fed up enough ban myself for however long it takes for them to remove their heads from where they've stuffed them. I check their updates forum once or twice a week but at this point the odds are heavily against them doing anything but business as usual, as you're seeing with yet another batch of giveaways.

And just when I thought I was over it, I'm feeling the creeping urge to go into a rant on the myriad and systemic problems that are causing them to ruin a really good product. But it suffices to say that it's nothing that should shock a WoT veteran all that much, so I'll just cut myself off there.

They could solve their dwindling player numbers if they fixed their tiering system. It is completely broken beyond belief right now. Instead of admitting it. They are digging in their heels.

I played WT for a number of weeks and then decided to try WOT. I've never been back ...

Still a nice game.

I really wish they would properly implement arrestor gear and catapults.
