He was to be the future brother-in-law of a buddy/coworker of mine... you hear about all these soldiers being killed in Iraq and it just doesn't fully register until it hits so close you can practically feel the family's pain.

Personal account of what happened:
some marines were ambushed and were being pinned down, his unit was called in to rescue them. he was laying down cover fire while the trapped marines made it out and his vehicle was hit by an rpg

A buddy of mine from high school was killed in Iraq last week. I know what you mean about it not really hitting home until somebody you know, or used to know, dies.

Right... and leave behind mom, dad, and sister to cry for him for many hours now...

eh. I just don't see the big deal.

blame it on me being a Christian.

they're in a better place; the only saddness we're feeling is for ourselves, and I'm not really down with that.

I remember no longer than 2 months ago how my buddy expressed his worry about him hearing that he was being sent to Iraq. The first thought in my mind, as an outsider to their family... was that he'll be fine... just like the majority of the marines being sent there. He'll hardly meet much resistance... they're worrying for nothing. Then I hear this actually happened. 13-some-odd-thousand get sent and ~700 have died. What were the chances ? How a young life can be taken away from a family so easily... gone forever... you just never know... like the title says... makes you think.

I don't mean to disrespect on the fact that he died for me, I just never understood why people get all weepy over someone's death.

You, Sir, are not a Christian.

You're a retard and have obviously never suffered a personal loss.
Whatever personality/nerd/loser/social outcast issues you have stay out of topics like this.
Piss of retard.

You're a perfect example of how faith sometimes requires the lack of a brain.

I guess. I've always believed in an afterlife, and I've lost a lot of people who were close to me. But I figure, if they're in heaven, why should I allow myself the luxery of feeling sorry for my loss?

Read the Bible much?

Right before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Jesus himself wept. He was with all the family members and saw how much they cared and how troubled they were.

Death isn't a good thing, whether you believe in an afterlife or not.

Romans 6:23:

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Without sin, we would have no death.

As always, the poor people die and the rich ones benefits. I feel sorry for the dead and wounded, and more for the ones that will have only their memories.

I have an idea - let's send loki8481 to "a better place". Why are you wasting your time on Earth when Heavens the place to be - you should be in Iraq trying to convert those heathens. Maybe you can meet your God a lot quicker that way...

Imagine an Army of those like loki8481 who didn't fear for their lives because they knew they were going to a better place? It would be just like those Islamic Facist we are fighting now

yeah, I'm not big into fearing for my own life either. that's not to say I would walk willingly into my death for no reason, but when my time is up, my time is up. I fully expect my friends to throw a huge party after I'm gone :)
