The apartment I live in wants a $300 deposit, $200 non-refundable if you want to bring any pet it. They are being real dicks about it, considering the carpet in my apartment seems older than me.
I have a friend who lives close by in a different apartment complex who got a puppy, and never paid the pet deposit, and they have not said anything. I was thinking about doing the same thing, until they say something.
Anyone ever try this? Am I being a jerk by trying to pull a fast one on the complex?
 
What happens if they determine that you tried to pull a fast one. Could violate your lease and you be out the door.

I doubt they would kick me out. Probably just ask for the money.

I plan to pay, but money is tight right now. But my mom, who is keeping my dog, told me that I need to figure out a way to take him back. So I am in a pickle, and I don't want to be broke.

Are they willing to compromise? If you have old carpet, they might be happy to get what they can, and come down some. Maybe if you offered them a $100 non-refundable deposit? You'd pay that for your dog, wouldn't you?

Are they willing to compromise? If you have old carpet, they might be happy to get what they can, and come down some. Maybe if you offered them a $100 non-refundable deposit? You'd pay that for your dog, wouldn't you?

They won't budge. I even offered to pay it in installations. $100 a month, just to make it a little easier on me, and with them still getting their $300. I signed a 1 year lease after all, I am not going anywhere.

It's perfectly legal, because it's in their policy. I am either going to have to pay them up front, $300, or not have my dog until I do.

I could pay it, if I had to put it on my credit card. I would just like to put that off as long as possible. But if they saw me with him, and decided to be dicks, who knows what they would do. Well, I'd say either pay up or find somewhere else for your dog to go. Too risky to bring him in on the sly.
