The fastest (realistic) diet that I know of is Atkin's. You lose weight quite quickly. Unfortunatly studies are showing that very few Atkin's people can keep it off and in 6 months other dieters have passed Atkins dieters and get better while Atkin's dieters are gaining it back. So lets forget the "lose weight quick" ideas.
I'm a big proponent of conservation of mass. Mass in - mass out = mass accumulation. If you want to lose weight, you
have more going out than what goes in. There is no other possible way of losing pounds. Put 5 pounds in, take 7 pounds out, and you lost 2 pounds.
Excercise does affect both the mass in and the mass out portions (indirectly). Thus since you are limited to mild exercise, you should focus on things you can do directly. (1) Eat less. (2) Eat foods that will pass through you rather than being absorbed (high fiber diet).
Eating less takes will power. But there are ways of making it easier. Do what your mom said not to do: spoil your appetite. Eat a snack 30 mintues before a meal - a protein or fatty snack is the best at spoiling appetites. When you are full, stop eating. Use smaller dishes when serving yourself (you'll be surprized at how much less people eat just by doing that). Play music you hate when eating. Let yourself have treats, but just small amounts of them. Etc. All of these things have been shown to dramatically lower the amout of food people eat WITHOUT making them hungry.
