Walmart sold me the wrong product and now does not let me return it - UPDATE 3/15 : They will take it back

No kidding. If the cashier had opened it to check, we would be reading threads like, "OMG, some damn Wal-Mart cashier opened my fscking digicam box just to make sure the right product was in it, as if I weren't smart enough to do it myself!"

i once had this happen at an office depot.


thing was i came back the same day like right away. but i was probably lucky. bought an hp 48g calculator, and someone had taken the calc out of the box. they did let me return it though.

I dont know if you have worked for retail or not, but when an item is returned, it can be categorized as new (which means it will be put back on the floor), open box, defective, will-be-written-off. In this case, the camera was returned as new. Did the cashier check to make sure that it was indeed new? NO
Would you like to shop in a store where you have to check everything that you purchase to make sure that they are selling you the products that are supposed to be in the box? I don't think so.

No, I've never worked retail or food service, and I've never walked or groomed dogs.

Would I blame the cashier for not doing something that I didn't do myself? No.
Would I trust a Walmart cashier to know the difference between an S100 and an S300 camera? Nope.
Do I think you got a bum deal? Yeah.
Do I think the store will bail you out? No.
Would I take it to a regional or corporate level now that the store has failed you? Of course.

Would I post the details to ATOT and expect sympathy?

last update: I got a call from the store and they said after they reviewed the forwarded complaint from the home office, they agree to take it back

Glad it worked out for you. People who buy stuff and return something else in the box are the lowest form of life. It amazes me that retail companies, especially Circuit City and Best Buy, haven't caught on and started doing something about it (like training their employees to tell the difference between a video card and a network card?).

Some places do. I've returned things and they've checked the serial # on the product against the one on the box.

I once almost bought an empty box from Target. I was going to buy a notebook wireless adapter. The box was sealed but there was a only a small tear on the corner of the box, other than that everything looks good. I had the cashier on the electronic department opened the box because I felt that the box was a bit too light than what I thought it should be. Sure enough, somebody had stolen the adapter but leave the manual and the cd rom inside still in a new sealed contition. From that time on, whenever I buy something expensive, I always open it in front of the cashier. I paid that one item separately from the rest of my items that I don't bother checking and it has been working fine for me.

They do. Every Item I have returned to one of these stores it gets inspected. It dosnt help that my local circuit city is one of the top cash producing branches in the country.. its also the most prone to shoplifting.


Now, I don't know about you but I have seen things returned to Walmart that were not even bought at a Walmart, even out of box items. It was really kind of wierd. However, usefull to know. If Walmart will give me credit for an item someone else refuses to take back I'll deal with Walmart instead of the headache.
