I almost bought one the 1st time around.. but I really wanted a an XGA screen, since the 800x600 just doesnt cut it for me anymore.. I went for a Toshiba 2805-S201, for $999.99 NEW, which I think for $150.00 more than the HP is worth it.. It comes with a DVD, 6 gig hd, 13.3" tft screen 1024 x 768, and bass subwoofer built in! Its on clearance at best buy stores stores (if you can find one left!), if you can find one, and last month (ended 1/31) toshiba had a $100.00 mail in rebate..

Lex,
I hate Toshiba Laptops!

My last Toshiba battery only lasted about 45 minutees. (no dvd)

And, I positively hate that thing they call a Nub. (mouse pointer) That nub is the most aggravating thing I ever used. Sure, you could use an external mouse but, I prefer a Touchpad.

Also, I Updated the firmware (As a Toshiba Rep. said to do) and I was then, unable to do fresh reloads from the master installation disk. I was told that they had to send out another one.

Just me two cents.

unsped - Thanks for clarifying that, I thought I searched the archived messages but apparently I missed it.

Got mine this afternoon. I'm setting up my software on it right now. DVD runs extremely well. Watched a little bit of James Bond earlier. Comes with a fair amount of software. My kids love the pinball game it came with. So far so good.

The website says $1099. That's $350 more expensive. Even at $999 it's $250 more.

Uhh..ok..but If it's a dead deal then why did he suggest looking for one if it can't be found at that price now?

Sold out...................................

Is someone buying all of it and selling it on E@ay? Thats not right man.

DDCSpeed: Yup. One guy has 15 of them for sale on Egay. That's over $10,000 worth of laptops he bought. Geez. Way to save some for everyone huh?

hkchan: the screen you want is a TFT screen. Lesser screens will be tough on your eyes. SVGA TFT will do up to 800 x 600, XGA TFT will let you run at 1024. But I don't know who would want to run at 1024 on a 12" screen which is why the XGA TFT screens seem to be pretty much only on the 13" and larger screens.

namlook, thanks for the info. I've seen HPA (IBM Thinkpad i1230 and HP Pavilion N3410) and DSTN (Toshiba Satellite 2250XCDS). What are they?

If I remember correctly, HPA is between active and passive matrix. I think it stands for High Performance Array or some such. Not as good as Active matrix aka TFT, but not suck.
DTSN = passive matrix = suck.

DSTN is bottom of the line, with poor contrast.
HPA is a step above that, but below the quality of TFT.
Be aware that laptops resolution is not like a PC's.
If the laptop ships with XGA, 1024x768, then it is made to run full screen at 1024x768. Different resolutions will not change the Font or Icon size, but will only change viewable screen size. If you set it for 800x600, it will only fill the center of the screen, and will have a large black border around it. You can usually stretch the image to fill the screen, but then it looks like total crap. Since 1024x768 results in very small Icons and fonts, you would only want XGA with a screen of at least 13". I have both a 13" XGA 1024x768 Toshiba, and a 12" SVGA 800x600 IBM, and the IBM is a little easier to use since the XGA 13" 1024x768 image is so small.

So without knowing anything else specific, which would you pick? A 12.1" TFT or a 13" HPA, both running at 800X600.

If you're asking based solely on the LCD display with the given choices I would definitely without a doubt go for the 12.1" TFT even though the 13" HPA is marginally 0.9 larger the quality is so much better. Read some LCD, notebook/laptop, HPA threads in the General Hardware forum and you'll probably find that most people agree that HPA sucks.
