Walking Challenge @ Work Mini Rant

We started another round of a Healthy You challenge where employees monitor their daily steps with pedometers given by the company...it is all honor based and we have one individual who everyone here agrees is blatantly lying about her step counts.

In our previous challenge, she claimed to have walked 500K steps in one week (averaging over 70K steps a day) and said it was because all of the walking she did at Disney World. Given the amount of time spent waiting in lines and caring for her kids, this seemed a little high. (I spent an entire day at Six Flags and only got 30K steps). When we asked her about this, she claimed that riding on the rollercoasters must have increased the count on her pedometer

During this 8 week challenge, she averaged between 20-25K steps a day but afterwards, she didn't look like she had lost any weight (she is about 5' 2" and weighs around 130 lbs - some weight loss should have been apparent as she is not a junk food eater. she actually brings leftovers from home that are pretty healthy - lots of veggies and stuff).

Monday was the first day of the new challenge and she said she walked 22K steps even though she watched her kids play little league that evening and she cares for her Dad who lives with her. I got 20K steps on Monday and nearly half of that was 45 minutes on an elliptical.

Just sucks that there are people out there who have to lie about stuff like this...

not that it matters, but she is a 'one upper'...for every story you tell, she has story that is better than yours (like if you went on a vacation to Las Vegas, her vacation in Monte Carlo was better)...this probably has alot to do with it...

anyway, end of my weak rant.

we do have a conversion chart that allows you to convert certain activies to steps (bike riding, aerobics, etc)...one group consists of people who bike to work everyday...that team averaged a million steps a week (4 team members at 250K steps each/week)...

this makes that 700K claim I ranted about earlier even more suspect...

Yeah, I feel it.
Best stop caring. So what some lady lies? She is insecure. You probably can run or walk more that she can. Let her look better on paper while you are better in reality :p
Everyone knows people lie, so why bother worrying about it?

edit: Last week I was in a night club with my good friend and a girl he brought (not his GF). Anyways, we 3 are talking, and he is like, "These boxers cost $50 each on ebay..they're from (Insert top end name brand here)." I am not an "one-upper" so I just said, "LOL I wear boxers from Walmart, $8 for set of 4... they work okay".

You know what you should do? You should measure her normal step then multiply it by 500k. Let's see how many miles that is. I'm sure it would be impossibly large. I'm gonna calculate it for myself and see how it would turn out. brb with an edit.

EDIT: Lmao, alright so here we go. I took the distance from the tip of my back foot to the back of my front foot, which was the shortest distance possible. It was on a conservative step while walking casually. That was equal to ~14 in. 14in is 1.16 ft. 1.16ft x 500,000 steps = 583,333 ft. 583,333 ft / 5280 ft in a mile = 110.48 miles in a week. That's over 15 miles a day if she was there for a full 7 days. Lol, go measure her step and call her out. I highly doubt she walked over 5-8 miles in a day at Disneyland.

The company a friend of mine works for has a fitness challenge, except instead of useless measure like steps taken, they pay for someone to come in (not sure their title) and measure various body metrics, height, weight, body fat (calipers I think), waist size etc. They then agree on a weighted average formula (gender adjusted I believe). At the end of the challenge, whoever makes the largest improvement across all areas wins. That is a real test of fitness improvement, as long as the calculation is fair and makes sense. Steps taken is retarded.

If you wanted to go nuts you could have VO2Max tests before/after, then you get to watch the epic walker barf everywhere :)

just found this tidbit of info about the lying co-worker as we were joking about her walking another 25K steps yesterday even though she called in sick...

another co-worker who is into arts/crafts and 'stuff' made a poodle skirt (have no clue that is and too lazy to google it) for the 'lying employee'. anyway the 'lying employee' said she was a size 6. After trying it on, it was too small and she blamed it on the fact that the brand of clothes she wears, she is a 6. Turns out she was a size 10.

Why on earth anyone would lie about this knowing you would get caught is just silly....this is pretty funny stuff though...

Well women would lie about their size and weight. Do you think a woman is going to tell you she weights 130 lb? Nooo, she will say that she is 100 lb.

edit: maybe take up idea of measurements with management? explain to them why steps taken is retarded.

Tell her you watched "From the Earth to the Moon" while wearing your pedometer, so you feel that entitles you to claim the equivalent steps you'd take while walking 480K miles (one round trip, if I remember the distance right?). ;)

Sounds perfectly legal using her logic. Do it! :p
