 That's only 5 people.

...It's 6.

No, it's 5.

"I" means one person.
when he says "i went out with 2 other couples..." that implies that he is also part of a couple ;)

No, if he said "My spouse and I went out with 2 other couples" that would imply he is also part of a couple.

edit -- for bolding

Nope, simply poor English.

"I" for one.

"We" for two.

sure, and he could have also just said "we" if he had figured that not everyone here knows how to interpret english.

Meh, I've had more foulups with people writing it down than memorizing, because the ones who *usually* memorize are good at their jobs.

I went out with 2 other couples the other night thus making 6 people. We met at a nice steak restaurant for dinner before a movie. It was dinnertime and the restaurant was about half full.

The waitress came over and took our drink order. Nothing too complicated, a few cokes, teas, and waters. She took our drink order (which wasn't very complicated) without writing anything down. When she came back in about 5 minutes to take our food order, she once again did not pull out her little pad to write the order down. Knowing these couples, and knowing that they always want their order specialized, I suggested to the waitress that she write down the order. "Oh no, I'm real good at this, you'll see!"

Well, Jim ordered first and his order would have taken almost a full pad of paper, extra salad dressing, no onions, fries on the side, medium rare, etc. etc. By the time we were half way through with our order, you could see she was already having problems as she was repeating (wrongly) back to the people whose order she had already taken. Again, I suggested that she write down the order as a disaster dinner was in progress. After I made the second comment about her writing things down, I suppose I intimidated her and she quit repeating the orders back.

When she left, we honestly were taking bets if anyone was going to get their order right. The salads came out first and only two were right. We decided to 'grin and bear it' and ate them even though they were not prepared the way we asked. When our meals came out and the steaks were not cooked the way we asked we called over our waitress.

She actually had the nerve to argue with us. We called the manager over and we explained the situation. That if she had written things down, this would not have happened. He ?comped? our meal. If waitresses believe that they command such a powerful memory, perhaps they should look for work in the 'rocket industry' instead of the 'food industry'!!

EDITED for the alphabet imparred.

i'm curious as to your definition of "a nice steak restaurant."

That's possible.
Or if he simply knew how to speak and write it properly; but the larger question is why make yourself look stupid by defending another person's poor writing skills?

not a super nice steak restaurant because they usually have everything ala carte. if you have a complicated order, expect it to get messed up. my sister works in the food service industry and her restaurant prohibits writing of orders because its too posh for itself. i say this guy went to a houston's-ish restaurant.

man all this grammar and trying to tell the OP how he was mistaken how many people he had in his party is proof why many here spend their nights alone.

I had this happen to me at california pizza kitchen last week. Not only did they give me the two dishes they got incorrect, but they gave us 20% off. I got four meals and an appetizer for $36 including tax and tip.

No, if he said "My spouse and I went out with 2 other couples" that would imply he is also part of a couple.

Actually not.

The fact that he said "I went out with 2 other couples" is what should clue you in.

If he had said "I went out with 2 couples" then that could be interperted as a group of 5. The word OTHER implies that he was also part of a couple.

I think you are all wrong. The OP wrote an inconsistent sentence. The "I" and the "other" create an inconsistency. One or the other is incorrect usage. The reasonable interpretation when you consider the whole story is that there were 6 people because the OP said there were 6 people. Without that it would be unclear and arguing either side is moot.
