All of this is why tipping sucks. I like to know how much I am spending/ how much the food costs etc, without worring about what percent I have to pay somebody for doing their job.
The Amercia's is the only place in the world where people EXPECT to be paid tips. Everywhere else, people are paid by their employer, tips are just that, for extra special service, not expected service!

My 2 cents

so me and a group of friends go to a bar. My tab comes out to $46 or so and i leave a $7 tip because there was another tab open for the table and he buddy was gonna tip himself to.

The waitress comes back and tells me that if anything is wrong with the service because she isnt happy with the tip. Anyway, i tell her my friend cut his lip because the glass you brought was chipped, she screwed up the food order, and the service was slow.

With that said, i thought i was being fair with my tip. And then she says "feel free to leave a cash tip on the table". At the point, i was sure i wasnt going to so I closed the tab and left. The waitress runs outside calling me and my buddies assholes. I throw a business card in her direction and tell her to take it up with the law firm I was for and advise her to go back inside and make earn her $7.50/hr.

Usually, i wouldnt even bother but i thought she was waaaaaaay out of hand. What do you all think? Was she in the right? Was I?

Good story up to the point where you threw a business card at her, that was immature
punching her would have been immature. what he did was noble.

I was at a place I go to at least every 2 months,
the service Really sucked one night, I Left NO tip.

Had the same waitress on this last Friday, the service was ok, not great; but ok,
better than the last time, So i left a tip just over 15%.

If the service from the same person is only OK, next time, 10% tip.

Glad I don't need to earn tips to pay my mortgage.

He was calling him an idiot for what he said about being noble. I agree, that guys an idiot, how is throwing a business card to someone noble? especially when you in no way represent them, your just a student? As he said before, he can't do anything without the supervision of a real attorney. Thats just giving the firm a bad reputation if she talks about it to a lot of people.

@ OP : Everything seemed good until you talked about the business card. But i think you were generous to give a 15% tip to someone like that, she should be thankful she still has her job.

Fvck her. She's lcuky she got the standard 15%. Actually, that's the minimum I'll tip. Unless the service is noticeably poor and people in my party are complaining, in which case I'll tip less.

Usually, I tip 17-18% 20% for decent service.

The secret to getting good service is to tip them up front. It works everytime, our drinks come quickly and our food always come out warm.

I agreed with you up until the last part. What exactly is wrong with making an honest living?

Agreed. The OP sounds like one of those egomaniacal people that think they are high-and-mighty. I'm willing to bet considering the OP's outlook on people and jobs, there may have been more to the waitress' side of the story.

15% = Standard
10% = Substandard Service
20% = Exceptional Service

In Cancun, a waiter at a fine restaurant confronted us with our 10%. The service/attitude was crappy. I stared back at him as if I was gonna kick his ass (i'm 6'4" and muscular) and he backed down. The funny thing is that he was really pissed off...he stared at my tip on the bill for a long time in the back of the restaurant and showed a waiter friend of his (who blew him off). He was a cocky little fvck who thought he was entitled to generous American tips.

If that waiter would give me more grief, I'd say "You're right, let me change the tip"....and then change it to 0%!

wtf? since when did 15% become "a bit on the low end"? 15% is normal. 10% is on the low end

LOL, this thread is fast becoming 100% shens.
I asked for proof and the OP is nowhere to be seen.
I can't fathom any server confronting customers on 15% and 20% tips respectively.

When was tipping 15% on the low end? Tips usually run 15-20% for good service. For lousy service, expect less.

People are expecting way too much tip these days without earning it.

Lip cut on glass
service is slow
food is screwed up
waitress complains about 15% and 20% tips

But, the OP can make a believer out of me if he simply posts a copy of the receipt. (cross out the credit card number of course.) The OP has chosen to ignore my doubts since I first posted them.

I still have a fvcking problem with the whole tip scheme. Even a haircut requires some form of tip. For christ sake!!! If you don't cut my hair (perform the service I came in for), then how am I going to pay you? But like someone posted above, people have personal opinion regarding this issue. This gal was defintely overboard or flunk math.

Exactly !!
Yup, just post the receipt.
Even if you don't have it, you can just get it from your CC statement online.
Don't think we will see this though.

she's lucky she got anything. I went to Brick Oven the other night, and our waitress was, well, not horrible, but bad. She got no tip at all.

Geez...never heard of a waitress getting confrontational with a customer over a tip before. Not a good sign for her.

What is going on with tips lately. She gets $7 dollars from you and has how many other customers. How much does she expect to make per hour. I personnally tip well at bars but for the amount of time she spent on you 15% is fine.
