Given the crappy service, I'd say your tip was generous, OP. That girl was being a bitch.

When I get good service I tip 20% or more.

okay/decent service gets 12-15%, depending on my mood.

Crappy service gets less.

When making my judgement of the service I do take in consideration how many table they have. If they are working their butt off but just have too many tables I'm not going to hold it against them.

The proper way to react in this situation:

Go back in the establishment and ask to speak to the manager. Explain the situation calmly and politely to them. Then demand your entire tip be returned.

Never yell, threaten, snap or react to hostility. Being calm and polite is paramount.

Get the contact info for the owners of the establishment. Explain the situation to them in the same manner.

What the waitress did was not only wrong, it's taboo among wait staff. You NEVER comment on a tip to the customer. NEVER.

The wait staff at a buffet still provides service to you, whether it is simply cleaning dishes from the table, refilling drinks, etc.

This evening, my wife and 4 of our 5 kids went to Old Country Buffet for dinner. (the oldest was at a birthday party) The bill was somewhere around $18.50 or so, and I left $3. That was more than 15%, but it was only $3...the waitress was good about keeping the dirty plates off the table. We go to buffets and always tip. Depending on service, though, the server may only get $1...it depends on how long my glass is empty and how high the plates get on the table.

I was out with friends back in high school and my friend did that to the waitress as a joke. Pulled out the wad and announced it at the start and everything. She was a good sport and got a good tip. I wouldn't have done it but it was funny when he did.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy for shameless bribery or accept crappy service/awkward situations/ from all of the examples i've seen on ATOT.

Here, people get paid a decent wage, and they do a great job, or they get fired. No unpleasantness or awkwardness about how much to tip, you pay what is noted on the bill & everyone is very happy.

I tip 15-20% myself. If the server can't keep my glass from running dry (a huge pet peeve of mine) their tip goes down quickly.

I don't blame servers for the food quality, they don't cook the stuff. So my main determination of the server's tip is how whether or not my glass runs dry.

Normally I'll tip $1 per drink, even if it's only $3. I assume you were at a restaurant and not a bar. You should tip more at the bar.

Yup, much better method IMHO. Tipping sucks.

I really don't care too much about "service" anyway, unless I'm eating at a fancy restaurant. If you're at a bar or a chain restaurant, it seems to me that taking your order and bringing you your food (which is all I expect) shouldn't earn you a bonus, since it's just your job. If I want the water in my glass to be refilled every five minutes, the waitstaff to be dressed in suits, and a thorough discussion of what's on the wine list, I'll go to a fancy place, and expect to pay the $$$ for it. Tipping for "service" at a cheap restaurant is just pretentiousness on both sides of the deal, the customer and the staff pretending the place is fancier than it really is.
