I've never done it.
Basically, it is a tactic usually used by former waiters to help other waiters scam the system.

Some restaurants subtract the CC fees from the waiter's tip. So, if you are in a restaurant like that, you pay $5 and the waiter gets $5*97% = $4.85. Of course, not all restaurants do that to their staff.

Also, some waiters perfer to not pay income tax (illegal). If you put the tip in cash, the government will never have any record of the tip. If you tip on a CC, the government has the chance to find out about the tip.

The drawback is that you have to carry a CC and cash with you. Also, you don't get your 1%-5% CC cash rewards. So, you are losing money in hopes that the waiter may get a bit more tip.

Why do you have to carry a credit card + cash or think it must be some sort of scam? Some people like me, prefer to use cash to pay for meals at restaurants, simple as that.

Context, man, context. This entire thread is about paying the restaurant bill with the CC and the tip with cash. So, my response was regarding paying the bill with the CC and the tip with cash. My response does not apply to your situation.

Except, paying in cash prevents the same sort of issue from happening in the first place.

3 places I never use my CC; Restaurant, grocery store, gas station....especially on vacation.

That still doesn't explain why customers would pay with cc and leave tips with cash though, like many seem to do in this thread. I'm just like rbV5, only the exact opposite. I pay everything with credit cards, including tips. Why bother leaving cash when you can easily just write down the amount?

Alright, thanks everyone who contributed, I will wait to see if the amount changes. This was last Monday however, and it's showing up on my online banking account right now, so I have a feeling it's not going to change. I'll call the manager first, and then visa.

Customers may feel sorry for the waiters, they may have been former waiters, they may hate the IRS and want to keep the money in the waiter's hands and not the IRS, they may hate CC companies and want to keep the money in the waiter's hands and not the CC company. Everyone that I personally know who pays with a CC but cash for tip falls into those categories.

I personally put my tips on the CC since it harms me slightly and is of only minimal value to the waiter. If I wanted the waiter to get more money, I'd give a bigger tip.

Paying fully on the CC prevents the same issues.

I think when they use the Card + Cash, its more like dullard says, like doing a "favor" for the server. Lots of folks start out their working life waiting tables.

My wife has been a food server for nearly 25 years, she prefers cash, but writing in a tip after the fact is a BIG no-no and usually results in termination if the customer catches it and goes to management...its not a well thought out plan if you want to work long term.

You're right. It also allows you track your purchases, I just prefer cash for certain transactions.

How much of your time is $5 worth? Between posting this thread and spending god knows how long on the phone with credit card/corporate office/some restaurant manager, then apparently quite a bit. For peanuts like that I'd chalk it up to lesson learned and write "cash" next time.

There are many reasons. The biggest one is you will know your server has it in their hand when they get it.

I hate waiters and tipping. I'm currently in the process of creating a startup that will hopefully make waiters obsolete in 10-20 years.

if the waiter is really trying to scam, do you really think writing cash is going to stop that?

if you put a "line" or if you write an amount, or you write "cash" the process of disputing it remains the same.

Was there a prom in your area?

A lot of places 15% tickets on prom weekends becaus kids don't know how to tip. Maybe your tip wasn't 15% and they added the difference.

LOL and those are the places you get your best cashback. Up to 5% with many cards.

I usually write $0.00 on the tip line then add it in cash, but make sure that the cash is with my receipt so that the water(ess) knows that it was from me and not the other guests. I'm just wondering if this would actually confuse the staff.

It has nothing to do with the money.

If a waiter added a tip when they weren't supposed to, they just stole from him. Personally, I would do whatever I needed to do to make sure that waiter was fired. If that didn't work, I might wait outside the restaurant to see which car was his, then put a brick through his window. Or his face.

Be sure to fill out the total line too, because what you write on the tip line really doesn't matter. Whatever is on the total line is what you're paying (provided it's at least as much as the pre-tip total).

I had a bill of $58 once, wrote $12 on the tip line, then retardedly added those two numbers to come up with $60. Somehow it clicked in my head when I was outside in my car, and I ran back in and caught the waitress before she entered it into the computer. Not sure if she had noticed it or what she would have done if she did, but technically she would have only gotten a $2 tip. :Q

Yea, I could probably take advantage of something like that, but I pretty much just use CC for online purchases or airline tickets and such....cash or check card for small ticket or disposable items. I try to keep as much of my life as simple as possible so I can adequately juggle all my irons in the fire.

Thanks, because of paranoid people like you, I now understand why I get higher cash back percentages at those exact places. I never knew what made them special.

OK so an update:

I called VISA, they have opened a dispute with the charge and will reverse the extra funds unless I resolve it with the manager seperately - call time, 5 minutes.

I called the store, the manager is out but I left my information and let them know what happened. The waitress I spoke to said they do -not- add any sort of tip automatically, even with large parties of people. We'll see where this goes.

It is NOT about $5. It is about the principle, this woman was a horrible waitress and very unpleasant, and then she tries to rip me off. Fvck that.

Also, there were 3 of us, I covered the bill and someone ELSE got the tip, in cash.

QFT...carrying cash either falls into idiots/poor or those that could loose $3-4k in a day and just hope their wallet shows up.
