Wait a second...so technically, if our Geforce 3 equipped systems could run Splinter Cell pretty well...that must mean.

well, possibly. Could be that games like Halo run on an engine highly optimized for the xbox. Splinter Cell on the other hand is based on the Unreal Engine, which is optimized for pcs and consoles(gamecube, xbox, playstation 2 I think.)

Halo was originally a PC game and while optimized for the Xbox, at it's heart it's still the same engine.

Are you sure the SC engine is UT? I want to say I remember reading that also.

This isn't a national secret or anything. The NV-2a, or the graphics subsystem of the Xbox, is based heavily on the GF3 Ti. Unlike other nForce mobos.

Yup. SC is ut engine. Go to http://udn.epicgames.com/pub/Powered/WebHome/ to see a list of many of the games in developement using the unreal engine. Most notably are:

Devastation
Postal 2
Dark Sector
Deus Ex 2
Theif 3
Lineage II

Of course the X-Box has only 64MB RAM (plus a 733Mhz CPU). It goes to show how bloated WinXP is when you NEED 512MB RAM and 2Ghz to accomplish the same thing. :p

I was under the impression that the X-Box GPU is a GF3 with an extra vertex shader thrown in for good measure. A GF4 then ought to be able to cream any X-Box game.

It's all down to software being optimised for a particular piece of hardware. Soul Calibre on the dreamcast runs on a PowerVR 2 with 8Mb of vram. I don't think the PC equivalent graphics card can produce anything even close to soul calibre.

Speaking about crazy system optimization...i can't wait to see what RARE is going to do with the Xbox. Remember what they did for Donkey Kong for SNES? Perfect Dark for N64? They push systems to their limit.

And if you think think it runs well on a GF3, just think of much better a game optimised for the 9700 Pro would be. It's a shame that the video card manufactuors don't have in-house game studios to bring games to market based on their latest hardware. It's a shame that we have 3 years for everyone else to catch up.

I remember perfect dark very well. In particular, I remember it being choppy as hell some of the time. Not to doubt Rare's capabilities, but it seems they may have pushed it a little too far with perfect dark.

Did you have the expansion pak? I don't remember PD ever being choppy, and I beat the game like 3 times. :D

Halo was originally developed for Apple computers running GeForce2 GPU's I specifically recall Steve Jobs introducing Halo demo at the Mac World three years ago. I am not sure why the project was scrapped but it should answer your question whether it can run on PC's.

I coulda swore Bungie was originally aiming Halo to be released on the PC, not the Mac. And it was scrapped b/c MS bought out Bungie to make Halo a XBox exclusive title (until the near future anyway)

Don't forget that most XBox games run at a lower rez than most PCs and don't look as bad (aliased) as VGA monitors at the same resolution.

It's quite possible that a PC version was also in the works, after all most hit games do get developed for both platforms. The only reason I am sure of the Mac version, is that I did see the Halo demo at Mac World.

Let's not forget that underneath, Xbox is nothing but a PIII 733MHz PC with a beefed up graphics engine, so in theory any Xbox game should run fine on PC.

My question is... Will Doom3 run on a GF3 with acceptable framerate? Now that the GF3s prices are down and I'm not planning to play other major titles except Doom3... Does anyone know what I can expect from it?

donkey kong for snes was a greaaaaaaaaaaat game. my friend can beat it 101% (thats the highest right? i dont remember if it's 100% or the one extra secret made it 101%) in 59 minutes ,just under an hour :)
