Willie Nelson upsets fans with plans to perform at Beto O'Rourke rally

"Country music legend Willie Nelson has enraged some of his most conservative fans by announcing plans to play at a huge rally on behalf of Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic insurgent threatening an election upset in Texas.

The 85-year-old star will headline a free outdoor show in Austin, Texas, in support of the Democrat who is pushing to unseat the Republican senator Ted Cruz in November’s midterms.

“My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed,” Nelson said in a press release announcing the event, which his publicist suggested was his first-ever rally on behalf of a politician.

“Beto embodies what is special about Texas, an energy and an integrity that is completely genuine.”

[...]

One Texan wrote on Twitter: “Someone buy my Willie Nelson ticket for Friday, November 16. I am no longer willing to watch that hippie guitarist who supports that damn socialist running for Senate.”

^^^ As one of our illustrious posters manfully confessed about his own damn self (well, that's how I read it, anyway) just today:

Cruz is getting more and more desperate, lacking any significant fault to find with O’Rourke's policy's/platform Cruz has resorted to running an attack ad showing O’Rourke swearing at different events. Trump has pledged to pay Texas a visit to support Cruz but the way things are going for Trump this might wind up being the kiss of death LOL.

So the man who wrote several songs with pride about being a redneck is now being besieged by rednecks for being a dirty liberal?

Makes sense.

Maybe the reality of Trump's economic plans are finally starting to seep into redneck skulls? They've gone from shooting and burning the items that hurt their poor poor feels (Yeti coolers, shoes, etc) to wanting to sell these items. For people likely subjected to the Texas education system, this sounds like a step in the right direction.

This is nothing new, Willie helped out Kentucky politician Gatewood Galbraith's campaign back in the early '90s.

Have they not been paying attention to Willie Nelson for the past few decades? He's been solidly left-wing for as long as I can remember.

This reminds me of encountering someone several years ago who was outraged that Apple publicly opposed a measure that would have barred same-sex marriage in California. You know, Apple... the Bay Area company that once had a rainbow logo, used a "Think Different" slogan and had a not-so-secretly-gay COO turned CEO. Some people are just willingly blind to what's obvious to everyone else.

The snowflakes want to be outraged, and knowledge of history has never been their strong suit. In places with crappy education and a devotion to the right wing noise chamber, it's a bit of a double whammy.

Hey alt-right:

It's just a business deal in hopes of expanding Mr. Nelson's pharmaceutical empire. A you scratch my back Mr. Nelson and if elected, i'll scratch yours.
https://hightimes.com/news/willie-nelson-headline-rally-pro-cannabis-candidate-beto-orourke/

"Nelson’s involvement with weed extends far beyond his own personal use. He also advocates for marijuana on the political scene. And more recently, he has moved into the legal cannabis industry as a businessperson.

His brand, Willie’s Reserve, sells his own signature line of cannabis in a number of weed-legal states. Initially, the brand rolled out in Washington and Colorado. Then, a short time later, his strains started selling in Oregon and Las Vegas. Now, his products are also being sold in California dispensaries.

For his part, Beto O’Rourke seems to share some similarities with Nelson when it comes to cannabis. While O’Rourke may not be quite as public or outspoken as Nelson, he has made his position as a lawmaker explicitly clear."

Willie hasn't changed his POV about cannabis since he got high on the White House roof 40 years ago. Beto was 5 years old at the time. And if he's making money off legalization after all these years, good for him. Better that than big Agra hogging the pie.

I think Trump needs to hustle on down there to help out Lyin' Ted, get all lovey-dovey up on stage. It'll make 'em both look like idiots. I mean, insulting a man's wife & his father is fighting words in Texas or most anywhere in this country. It won't be Lyin' Ted anymore but rather Spineless Ted...

I think I remember Ted calling out Beto about not using his real name, funny stuff coming from Rafael Edward Cruz.

O'Rourke was given that nickname as a kid. It stuck.

I'm glad that Nelson's corporation is looking to make a shit ton of money on his pharmaceuticals too. I hope he branches out into opiates and other pain relievers.

So weak. Willie would be saying the same thing whether he was making money or not. He always has. They're both right about legalization. It's just better public policy & success in several states proves that emphatically.

So, uhh, why don't you tell us what's so great about Cruz? Cat got your tongue?

I'm looking forward to voting for Senator Cruz, he represents the great State of Texas and most of it's citizens. My bet is he'll win by about 10 points.

Because Freedumb, (not to smoke pot in Texas, of course) or was it the machine gun bacon? Tax giveaway to the Rich? His pro-life stance, which you claim to oppose? How about the way he stands up for the little guy, with his wife being a Goldman Sachs banker & all? How about that healthcare fuckover he voted for? Or is it just that he lies so well?

I can't wait for him to show how spineless he really is when Trump comes to campaign for him. Beto's ads will write themselves.

Beto has a lot of room to move, given the traditionally lousy turnout in Texas. He's getting people fired up, too, riding on positive energy. He can win & I hope he does because America needs to push back the tide of right wing filth that swept over us in 2016.

I have an idea for Cruz. Let's get Pussy Riot and include the poisioned member so Cruz has to look at what supporting Trump does for people.
