Hi guys,

here is my situation. As a student I downloaded the 64bit Windows7 upgrade from Digitalriver. When the download was complete, I launched the downloaded file, and got this error

"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only"

After contacting Microsoft and Digitalriver tech support and having both of them refer me to the other repeatedly, I'm still stuck.

Is it possible that the 64bit upgrade will not launch because the current OS is XP 32bit?

Any input will be hugely appreciated.

Please, please, please, please, please look at the rest of the forum before you post!!

You cannot upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. You MUST do a clean install.

Okay, I sort of figured that might be the problem. So the question that follows is, how do I get there from here? I don't have a bootable CD for the 64bit Windows7, just the downloaded installer?

Pay again for the 32 bit installer and then upgrade that? Might have screwed myself on this one....

I knew I should have stuck with XP Pro. Why fix it if it ain't broke? (oh yea, because of the 6GB of RAM sitting in the box with nowhere to go)

Just an installer?

I'm not familiar with this sort of installation process. You need to get a .iso file and burn it to a disc.

Yeah, its just an installer. At least thats what it looks like. Magicdisc doesn't recognize it as an mountable image. And I can't figure that error message out either. There is nearly a TB of free space on that drive, and of course being the admin I expect to have the right to...well then again, with windows you never know.

BTW, thank you for looking into this. Too bad those links to the ISO don't work anymore...

Convert the download to an ISO with this utility (Unzip it into the folder I list below)

In this example I made a folder in the root of my C: drive called Win7. Copy or Move the expandedSetup folder the download created into that new folder and put that oscdimg.exe into that folder also. Then go to the command prompt, change to the c:\Win7 directory and type this:

Oscdimg.exe ?u2 ?bC:\Win7\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com ?h C:\Win7\expandedSetup C:\Win7\Win7.iso

[If you have it on another drive letter or want to use a different folder just change accordingly]

Then you can burn that Win7.iso with any burning util, I used Active@ ISO burner (freeware)

Okay Slamma, I will try that. Oh, wait a minute, root of C drive?

I'm definately behind the curve here Slamma. Not sure how to change to the Win directory from the cmd prompt.

This is so technically advanced I can't help but feel good about it, like magic...

okay, I obviously dont understand what I am doing. I created a folder "Win7" in my C drive and copied the "expandedSetup" and the osddimg to it. Then I went to CMD but obviously entering C:\Win7 just takes me to that folder. Am I supposed to be entering that command in the CMD?

Sorry for the slow Noobishness. Must be frustrating when you know what your doing.

*Does a little war dance - cat runs away* Woot, Slamma, it worked! Thank you many times.

okay I now have a mountable image right? So I can burn that on a DVD and boot from it? Do I first have to reformatt my drive? Can I put the image on a USB stick and boot from that?

Can't wait to get all my RAM online...

Once you boot from the disk you can format it during the install. (select Custom instead of Upgrade)

I would boot it off the DVD you burn.. honestly I have no idea how to boot it off a USB drive.. it would probably be really slow anyway

Slamma, I'm off to the store for a big DVD, since this thing is nearly 4Gb. I really appreciate your help and advice. I will update on the final results.

Thank you again Slamma,

everything worked beautifully. Windows7 64 bit is installed, activated and running. Great solution.

So I also had that issue going from my Vista HP 32-Bit to Win7 64-bit. I got that error, but then was able to burn the iso file to DVD. I wiped the drive and started a fresh install. Everything seemed to go smooth as planned until I got to entering the activation key. It won't take! I know that I am using an upgrade version for a fresh install, but doesn't it ask you for the previous code then too? Either way, I tried the key code I got from digital river THREE times (and no, I am not mistyping it) but it keeps telling me it's invalid. Any ideas? I'm really frustrated and stuck here. Thanks.

The error comes after the unpack when it tries to run the 64-bit installer, which won't work on your 32-bit OS. Just check the directory it created...if its around 3.1 GB your good to go. Just use the ISO tips posted all over the place.
