I'm down to my last 3k. Once that is done the $400 I pay a month goes to one of my car payments. after a year that will all go to the other car payment and then to my mortgage. If I keep at it everything will be paid off in 8 years.

Soon as our tax refund gets here, we'll be debt free except the mortgage and some money I borrowed form my parents for something. Can't wait.

Congratulations man...

I wish I can say the same thing for my sibling :| :

* has at least 5 cards max out, with maxed out cash advances, paid at most minimum
* uses payday loans = death wish
* owes 20K in student loan that never goes down (only 2K principle is paid since 2001)
* owes me at least 10K over three years (this is more like a gift now)
* does not pay for rent, utilities, or food

* has a decent, good job (certainly more than enough for someone who doesn't pay rent)
* but monthly income < monthly expenditure (whatever the expenditures may be)
* checking account zero if lucky, negative mostly

* no sense of thoughts in spending whatsoever (conjecture, expenditures unknown, nothing fancy in sight)
* no accountability, responsibility, or x-bility whatsoever
* no plan, no budget, nothing, just more debts everyday
* no motivation to attempt to fix the situation (maybe in denial)

* possibly gambling problem <-- no smoking gun yet (not sure how to find this)
* although s/he gets birthday wishes and other coupons from a few casino sometimes in the mail

There isn't a day goes by that I don't resent so much and thinking how much better the
family relationship could be otherwise. It's not my debts, but it's certainly my problem and money  .

/rant

If anyone has been in a similar situation with family members, I would appreciate any advice.

Good job and congrats. Must be one of the greatest feeling in the world, being debt free. I still have to pay off my student loans.

make sure you stay above the water line. You have suffered enough. You should learn from your past stupidities.

Is your sibling living under your roof or someone elses'?

If under your roof: Kick them out and wash your hands of him/her.
If not under your roof: Wash your hands of him/her.

Any other course of action is a waste of both of your time.

Damn, I can't believe it! I needed somewhere to gloat. 🙂

Celebrate! Buy yourself a large boat!

Hahaha, HELL NO. I am just going to make gas purchases to keep the cards from being closed. The problem is, I only fill up maybe once or less a month. For the last few months, I've just been filling my friends tanks to create activity on my cards. They love me...lol

Congrats! However, you've got to be joking about cards being closed. I've got cards I haven't used for years and they never close them. Hell, if you call up to cancel they try to talk you out of it.

Congrats!!! Now as someone else said, CUT THE CARDS AND TOSS THEM. Honestly, they're going to be a little bug in your head saying, " it's ok you can make the payment"
You have the account, most likely they will not close it on you, if you ever needed it, you just call the credit card company and tell them you need a new card. but seriously, either lock them away or cut them up as the temptation will be to use it.

Do not get rid of them. Put them away in a drawer and every year on your birthday buy a stick of gum, but do not get rid of them.

I have a card that I keep as a backup to my main CC. Months ago I had to use it as collateral for a motel room for my family's Black Sheep. I called the company and lowered my limit to as low as it can go. Then, I forgot about it.

Recently, when I remembered about it, I called the company and asked them to re-raise my limit and they refused. If you close your accounts, they may not let you reopen them.

Times are tough and you do NOT want to be caught without credit if you need it in the future.

Dang, good job dude, that's a lot harder than most people would care to admit. I know everyone on ATOT makes $1 mil per year, lives in the playboy mansion, looks like Brad Pitt and has no debt and all, but that's great amdhunter, congrats.

The absolute WORST part of all that debt is that I have NOTHING to show for it. None of the clothes I bought, the car I paid for, all the expensive meals -- I have NOTHING. It all seems like it was money down the drain for a quick fix.

I don't have a single thing left of what was bought with that money.

sure you do... you have the memories of spending it.

A little like the money one spends on hookers and blow?

Well, my spending over the last 12 months is $360...so I really don't think I need to cut them up. I'd like to have them available in case of an emergency.

Next thing to do is build up at least 2-3 months living expenses in a high interest savings account like INGDirect. Work is less stressful when you don't need that next paycheck to survive.

Don't worry about making charges every month, at least for the Visa. They won't close it just because you go a month without owing anything.

Great job breaking free of credit card debt.

I second the living expenses I might even go 6-12 months in this current economic environment.

Doesn't hurt to have some mattress cash laying around too.....

That's one thing that makes me feel a bit better about my little bit of CC debt - I at least have a good bit of crap to show for it. Granted, not worth the ~10% interest, but it's at least something.

lol, buying the occasional tank of gas for them is enough IMO. And now that prices are starting to go up again, I probably will stop doing that...lol
