Granted it has bells ans whistles, but over 30g's for this little car. How can people rationalize buying one of these little cars for that much. Esp with their reliability problems. Maybe I will look at Mazdaspeed3 instead.

You must be talking about the the R32 one. But still though German cars are overpriced, and so are their resale values.

Most I ever paid for a VW was $2000.00. It was loaded, had a Sapphire XVII AM/FM Stereo radio and a fresh air fan!

You think a Mazda speed 3 can compare to an R32 GTI? =p

The specs on the R32 GTI's are insane. Also most people pay about 22k for a reasonable GTI.

I have a 2007 GTI and haven't had one problem with it. No rattles at all. I have more options than you listed and paid under 30.

edit: I compared to the MS3 and didn't like it. More noticeable turbo lag, interior isn't up to par, no sunroof, I think the rear end sticks out and looks horrible, no DSG (which is amazing and I used to drive stick).

The GTI drives amazingly smooth.

LOL, seriously! He didn't even look at the R32! If you're gonna spend >$30k on a GTI, it better be an R32.

I owned a 97 VR6, my brother a 20AE, my ex g/f a late 90's cabrio...none of us ever had any issues with the cars.

Most were pretty impressed with the 'VW's.

It's the depreciating dollar. If you wanna see something funny, look at the VW R32's price tag.

no a fully loaded MkV GTI can come close to 30K! Ridiculous! I own a MkIV GTI VR6 and I think VW is charging too much.

In fact, VW is having a hard time selling the MkV R32. the MkIV R32 sold much better since it was only 29K and many more features separating it from a regular Golf/GTI (better seats, better engine, better body kit, better interior trim, better steering wheel). The new R32 doesnt have many features other than all wheel drive that sets it apart from a GTI. and the new R32 starts at 35K IIRC. and it only comes in DSG. WTF? VW dropped the ball with this one. Yea the DSG is technically a superior tranny over the 6MT but American drivers dont relate a sporty car with flappy paddle shifters.

As a lifelong VW owner and minor enthusiast, it makes me sad to see the prices on the new GTI's. I've had great luck with my GTI's over the years, but the fact of the matter is there are many vehicles I'd rather pay $35k for. I know that's for the R32, but still. That's just way too much.

Really, you have a 97VR6 and didn't have to replace one window regulator? Shocking!

My Mazda3 has rattles now:( I am beginning to think I have a lemon....but there is no reason under the law where I can claim it.

Uh, the R32 DOES have a better engine compared to the GTI. Ever wonder what the 32 (3.2 V6) meant? People can get 300+ out of those with just an ECU upgrade. My friend's got a MkV GTI, he paid $23,some for it and got it with 0% financing. It's pretty fast, and even moreso with a $500 ECU retune. He had the trial for 5 hours of driving time from the dealer; I would'nt be surprised if it could hang with the Speed3.

doesnt have many features other than. I said many, not any. mkV R32 gets same seats as GTI, same interior trim as GTI, and almost same body kit as GTI (sans brushed aluminum bumper) whereas the MkIV R32 set itself apart in all those categories. You could look at a MkIV R32 from any angle and know that it's an R32. Cant do that with the MkV.

And yes, i know the R32 has a better engine than the GTI but it has the same engine as the previous R32. You'd think they'd give the next generation a better engine esp considering all its competitors are already at 300hp.

And care to show where people are getting 300+ out of a chip alone? They must have a super-duper chip that gives 50+ hp increase because GIAC claims "This exceptional upgrade increases peak power 5-13 hp and 8-15 ft/lbs. torque at the crank" (source). You might be thinking of 2.0T chip figures. The turbos get a much more hp/tq increase with a chip. NA cars such as R32 rarely does.

and it's a 3.2 VR6, not V6 :p
