We've been paying for about $50 - $55 a month for Verizon with Caller ID, call waiting, and 40 minutes of LD a month.

Found out from a friend that for about half the price I can get the same thing from Vonage. It's even better as it has a ton more features than we have now, we get to keep our phone #, and we get 500 minutes ld a month.
If that wasn't good enough because my friend referred us we get a $40 credit. Signup was $68 total including the first month of service and the Cisco ATA 186 unit. All we need is a router which we already have.
If it wasn't for the fact that I trust my friend and he's been using it for a couple of months I'd say it's way too good to be true.

I figure I have nothing to lose trying it, but how good is voice over ip technology these days?
Am I going back to dialpad hell using this?

I had it for 1 month and really liked it. It worked basically as advertised and most times the voice quality was ALMOST land-line quality. I got rid of it because switched from cable to DSL and needed local phone service to keep DSL anyway. But, if I had cable, I would definitely use it.

However, you probably won't be able to keep your current phone number. This was a big deal for me b/c I've had my number for like 15 years and didn't want it to go. Also, you can't dial 911. In addition, it may not be compatible with some home security systems (like mine), so that's another problem.

Otherwise, it works really well. I would definitely recommend it, especially as a second line to make long distance calls from.

MD.

We filled out the form to transfer our phone #. Even if we can't keep it, it won't be the end of the world to change our #.
Glad to hear the voice quality is good. As for 911 we have the cell phones. So far sounds like I'm doing the right thing.
