VOLCANO II

is the volcano II efficient enough to cool a Epox 8k7a with 1.2 Ghz 266mhz FSB and 256 of DDR PC2100 Memmory ? I won't be overclocking.

It is a decent hs/fan, but wont you be cooling your processor with it...not your motherboard/ram?
🙂

Anyway, not overclocking you should be fine up to an Athlon 1333.
VolcanoII = great deal for the $$$ if you are not overclocking.

If you plan to overclock an Athlon in the future you may want to buy a better hsf.

K, phew i was starting to think that I bought a defficient HSF. I won't need any compounds will I ? Like artic silver or other compounds ?

I just got a Volcano and it was very ruff. So I lapped it,which was very easy to do. I'm now running my Duron 800@950 with arctic silver, and temps are good.

jockdisvdude: The answer to your question is "yes." A Volcano II HSF will do fine with an EPoX 8k7a and a 1.2GHz CPU. (I used one with an EPoX 8KTA3/+ and a 1.33GHz T-Bird overclocked to 1.54GHz and temps were within an acceptable range.) However, I always use thermal compound and you should as well.

What does "lapping" mean ? If i use thermal compound, how often do i need to re apply it ? doesn't it get all crusty and mooldey ?

my volcano II wasnt the smoothest when i got it, but i applied some arctic silver and i get 42C @ 100% load on my 1ghz. I find that more than acceptable.
