On a side note, did you mean Lakewood?
Not sure I know where Lake City is...

Down for me in Western WA

was intermittant yesterday evening -- went down at about 10pm and I haven't seen it up since.

Did anyone get an explanation other than "Sunrocket is experiencing service degredation... check back later." from the website.

Just got an email from Sunrocket:

Dear XXXXXXX,

SunRocket is currently experiencing a significant network disruption. This means that you may not be able to receive or make calls from your SunRocket phone until this issue is resolved. Please maintain an alternative means of contacting Emergency Service should you need it while our service is down.

We are doing everything we can to isolate the problem and restore service. As soon as we know more we will send you an update. We will also post any additional details on the My Home page of the Member Account Manager.

We understand that this situation causes tremendous inconvenience to you, and we sincerely apologize for the interruption of service.

Sincerely,

Kevin Bennis

I'm beginning to wonder if SunRocket grew too quickly... and perhaps now they don't have the capacity for all of their users...

Down here too in Burbank, CA. Was very flaky yesterday as well. I would venture to guess this may have something to do with routing and or bandwidth issues created by Hurricane Katrina, as I've had minor Internet hiccups since then, (and Atlanta is a major POP, IIRC.)

I was curious if SunRocket had any status updates on their web site above and beyond the email sent earlier today. nothing on the front page, but upon logging in I saw:

Service Disruption affecting some customers

Sunrocket is currently experiencing a service degradation. Our engineers are working diligently to find a resolution as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued patience in this matter. If your Gizmo has no Voice light and/or no dialtone , then please power cycle your Gizmo. Please check back later for updates.

Last time there was a major disruption (a few months ago) I was given some Rewards credits. Hopefully they'll do that again and I'll have enough to get a free extra Uniden phone.

lol, well not to spread conspiracy theories, but I have heard that a few other internet-related services had problems today and saw someone attributing it to a solar flare. LOL, yes, I know. Who knows.

Anyway, I got that email from SR as well. Glad to know they at least let us know what's going on. Don't think I've ever had a service that's done that before. How many times has the cable gone out and the only way to get any info is to spend 30 minutes screaming at someone on the other end of the CS line?

Back down - 7pm and no service in or out. Tried forwarding my home phone to my cell and I still don't get calls.

I'll be cancelling SunRocket over the weekend or Monday at the latest.

Who's the best VOIP out there? Vonage? Packet8? My ISP (Roadrunner) offers a VOIP phone. Maybe I'll give them a try.

Folks, I really think SR is not quite ready for prime time. As I said before, too many outages. Great price, but maybe you get what you pay for.

If I am going to stick around,
I'll need some cogent answers.

Like:

1) Why no email to many of us that THEY were having problems and its not on our end ?
2) Why no notice on the first page of their website ?
3) Why do they not have a "state of the network" webpage ?
4) Why they offer no discussion forum for users of their service ?
5) Why they have not openly discussed the many short periodic outages that happen all the time
6) Why they haven't fixed this in spite of the fact that the CEO said
he would in the LAST notice to users in July! (Notice attached below)

Dear sunrocket Member,

On behalf of sunrocket and all of our dedicated employees, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience that resulted from a sunrocket network disruption that occurred on Monday, July 11. The disruption was caused by recent surges in subscribers and call volumes. Unfortunately, one of the partitions in our network was unable to handle the demand, and it took several hours for our engineers to fully restore the network. While thousands of subscribers remained in service during the disruption, we failed to meet our reliability standards. Last week, we activated a new partition that doubled our capacity, but we had not begun the process of rebalancing the system load between the partitions prior to Monday's disruption. While that rebalancing is now underway, we will be activating a third partition within the next week to further augment our system capacity and improve the reliability of the sunrocket network.

We also recognize that we need to improve our ability to provide real-time status and notices during network disruptions, though our primary goal is to ensure that our network is fully operational at all times. You expect and deserve reliable phone service, and sunrocket remains committed to providing exceptional service at an exceptional value.

As an expression of our regret for any inconvenience you may have experienced, we will add 10 points into your RocketRewards account. Thousands of sunrocket members have taken advantage of the RocketRewards Referral Program, and we greatly appreciate your contributions in spreading the word about sunrocket to friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. We are also expanding your opportunities for earning RocketRewards points, as well as introducing more redemption choices. You can learn more about RocketRewards at www.sunrocket.com/community/referrals.

We are continuously striving to improve your service and enhance our ability to serve you better. Thank you for being a valued sunrocket member.

Sincerely,

Kevin Bennis

This is getting ridiculous quickly. I can't have an outage for 1.5 DAYS on my home phone - assuming they will fix it soon. I'll be looking for a backup, such as SkypeOut - most of the time, I have no problem with my Internet connection, so no reason to go POTS, but SR is crapping out waay too much recently.

I've had Skype on the brain recently, also.

I would avoid skype rumor is they are being bought out by ebay, so they will definatly be going downhill.

Sunrocket is starting to scare me too. I already have had them for a few months so last week i decide to get another line from them, after waiting a few days i get an email that they were out of gizmo's and it wouldn't ship till the next week (this week) anyway on wednesday they did ship my second gizmo but the fact that they ran out shows they are having money problems. now the system is more down than it is up which is also a sign of money issues. dunno, can they really be making money at just $16 per month? what kind of overhead is there in this?

skype rumor is they are being bought out by FleaBay
Question. Do we get Skype before it gets mucked up by fleabay or wait 'till it's an accomplished fact? UGH! ebay is an ugly 500lb. gorilla.

LMAO. I liked the innie and woodie references. :D

A month ago I bought a 512 MB of these that also doubles as a MP3 player, I think it was around $50. But $20 is a sweet deal for the 256 MB type, no doubt.

Skype is not that useful, IMO, unless you know a lot of people who have skype as well (free calling between skype customers.) For that reason I donwloaded it, but haven't used it much. IMO Stanaphone is a better backup option. You get an actual free incoming number (NY area) and free faxing, also free conferencing. Calling out is under 3 cts. for domestic and international.

SR is stable at the moment. Hope it stays that way. We had good luck with it for quite a while, not a single minute outage for 2 months, then this hit. Hope they fixed whatever it was and it goes back to the same reliability that we enjoyed for quite a while now.

I just received an email reply that
I sent to them on Thursday. Says sorry for the outages, we are working to fix them, some type of compensation will be announced Monday. Just fix the damned service. Compensation will not get my phones working.

Is anybody elses voice mail light on their free uniden phone flashing since the outage even if they don't have new voicemail? Mine has been flashing since it was fixed on Friday.

mfbf-

If you listened to all your messages and the voicelight is on, two things: Make sure you don't have unlistened to messages on your signature line. If that is checked go to your base phone and press the button "Find Handsets" button. That should clear the lights.

I had the same problem. The light reset itself the next time someone called and left a message which I picked up. If you are still experiencing this problem you can try calling your number from another phone, leave yourself a voice mail and then pick it up. Do not know if this will work but its worth a try...

I didn't have a chance to check out my phone before Saturday night, but it worked fine then.

I dunno. It stinks that they're having issues, but I really can't complain. How many hundreds of dollars cheaper is it than the landline I had before? I guess it's not the end of the world for me. I have a cell that I use as a backup.

Anyone have problems when downloading large files and using SunRocket at the same time? Can this reduce the quality?

For some reason, even when not using the computer, my brother's SunRocket service seems to break up like a cell phone at times. It's quite annoying. Is this common?

I'd like to save money, but I'm not willing to settle for a vastly inferior service that will conflict with my other internet activities.

Thanks for the help.

I've had no problems using Sunrocket and downloading very large files simultaneously.
However... I have "the gizmo" set up behind my router. I've heard of people having issues with the gizmo in front of the router -- so if your brother has his set that way, you might suggest he place it behind the router. Depending on how much effort he want to put into it, the issues might also be resolved by logging into the gizmo and tweaking the quality settings. (I haven't had to do that, so I don't have specific suggestions)
If he already has it behind his router, then there may be settings in the router that could be tweaked in a similar way.
A phone call uses suprisingly little bandwidth (relative to cable/dsl) -- so "normal" web usage is unlikely to affect quality.
I think what you are describing is uncommon. I know myself and many others have commented that sound quality is excellent -- even when downloading large files from fast servers. I have "average" cable service (1.6mbps down, 250kbps up) and sound quality is excellent.
To get more suggestions on fixing your brothers issues, more info is needed.
Get him on here to post specifics -- how his hardware is set-up, if it's only certain calls, if it's only when using the wireless unidens, etc. There's lots of people here that can help.
