I am looking for a VNC/VPN solution, so I can run software on my home machine when I am on the road. Ideally, I would like a web-based solution, but I would also be fine with a client/server solution such as tightVNC, ultr@VNC, or realVNC or a hardware solution.

I tried googling for information, but there is so much to filter through. So:

- Are there any low-cost web-based VPNs? I know of gotomypc.com, but there price $20/mo seems high to me?

- Should tightVNC be easy to setup? I have a cheap router at home with a cable Internet connection. My home PC is running XP HOME.

- Are there any hardware solutions? I read somewhere that you can purchase a specific, older router and flash its firmware to support some type of VPN application.

I had set up a DNS name for my home and used UltraVNC to connect and it was great, but I was a little worried about security, then I found that I can tunnel into my smoothwall box with a program called putty and then connect via VNC to whatever computer I need. So set up a smoothwall machine and you'll be set. ;)

Yeah Putty is one of the solutions.

There are few solutions using Ultre@VNC for both Windows and Penguin.

I got realvnc to work without any problems. tightVNC gave me a fit, and I couldn't get it running. I'll give the Ultra one a try now.

OK,

I got UltraVNC working. This is the real deal. It totally beats the gotomypc.com service that my company uses.
