Yep, your running the console and you need to connect to something. Connect to 127.0.0.1 or 'localhost' (same thing) and that should enable those features as you'll then be managing the locally installed server.

OK. By the way, all I want to do is run a scanner in Windows XP and VMware has USB support whereas VPC doesn't. If I don't want to pay for the Workstation version, is the server version the best one or is the player just as good?

I believe player has the same usb support as workstation, but you'll need to find a tool to build the vm.
