Yea, you can't hotplug devices. I doubt XP even supports PCI hardware hotplug even on hardware that supports it.

I see the scanner I wanted to add in the VM menu. But how do I install the it in XP? When I click it, nothing happens.
 
If you added a USB controller to the VM then it should simulate a USB hotplug event as if you plugged it into a physical machine.

How come it's not working? I see the Scanner in the VM > Removable Devices > USB Devices > Seiko Epson Scanner menu. That's it. It certainly doesn't show up in XP.
 
Are you sure nothing's claimed the scanner in the host OS? When that's happened to me VMWare's always just given me a dialog to decide whether to disconnect it from the host but that's on Linux.

Yes. It's in my Device Manager with a question mark next to it. Do I just delete it?
 
I really can't say, my use of VMWare on Windows is pretty limited and when I do it on Linux it just prompts me to disconnect the device from the host and give it to the guest.
