This OS bickering is really starting to piss me off, if only for the fact that people care.

I agree but Microshaft is ending support on it this year.

Oh, I care about vista because I will be building systems using that O.S. so I better learn how to use it ;)

<sarcasm>well since im better than everyone else here, i'd like to say that i'll stick with my *insert brand of linux here*. everyone knows that its supremely better than anything microsoft could come up with, because lets face it, its so much easier to use... even for techno idiots such as my dad A.K.A "captain caveman</sarcasm>

in all honesty i will probably be getting it if its as good or better than XP, and if the price is right

I am actually looking forward to vista and it will be the first windows OS that i actually fully purchase.
I don't know if i will be interested in it at launch especialy since the WinFS won't be included but i don't think i can wait till SP1 for it to be included on the cd. Also i don't like the fact that it won't be shipping with both 32bit and 64bit versions which will slow 64bity driver development since more 32bit versions will likely be sold. Initial cost might also be too high but i will make the shift within the first 6 motnhs of its release

Having played with the Post-Beta1 (5219, if I recall) I have to tell you, you have no idea what you're talking about. While I don't see a lot of compelling reasons for the upgrade just yet, the OS is, all in all, pretty slick. The new Start Panel is a huge improvement over previous versions (note: ALL Start Menu's prior to XP's panel SUCK, and Vista's is the best by *far* even in this early beta stage).

My choice will be made when Vista gets closer to release and we see how many of the rumors end up being true and/or false, how fast and secure the OS is compared to XP and whether it's flexibly manageable through Group Policy. From the features I've tested so far, it's likely that I will not only buy it, but recommend a purchase company-wide.

You're still using 2000 over XP? *Insane* :) 2000 is sh1t by comparison with XP SP2.

where are the hybrid os versions?

Visit MSFN and check out their guides. Visit Nlite to grab NLite, which will help you streamline XP and remove components you don't need or want.

Properly configured, XP SP2 is a *great* OS that's fast, stable and secure.

yah i know i how to trim the fat i had it down to 40mb off the boot so its not that bad,
hell even linux is like 40
but i heard vista needs like 1gig o ram
and i know a boatload of "dell users" who run like 256-500 off the boot
even though its not windows fault its really all the retarded antispyware programs
so i hope we dont need 1gig of ram for vista, we need that now
so really we need like 2 gig

Or, you could just install win2k and be done with it.

It doesn't look like it offers any benefits for the upgrade, certainly not worth the expected price. Same story with windows XP really.

That said I'll likely install it on some work machine since it will be required learning. Hopefully once I turn off all the spinning wirly gigs it'll only use twice as much memory as its predecessor.

Unless they get the 64bit support and windowsFS in there I don't see the point really. Holy sh|t its a new start menu!
