anyone know where i can find the sata ich8 drivers to slipstream onto the xp sp3 bootable iso?

Just did this two days ago for a laptop (needed ICH8M drivers). Download Intel Matrix Storage Manager and run the exe in the Command Window with the -A -P switches.

iata78_enu.exe -A -P<Path>
For example, iata78_enu -A -PC:\Drivers

You will get three folders - Docs, Driver, Driver64
Slipstream the appropriate folder using Nlite (Driver64 obviously being the 64-bit drivers).
Remember, you need to integrate the Textmode drivers, not PnP.

yah i finally got it working with nlite 145 b2. I originally tried xp pro, then sp2 integrated, now sp3 5508 integrated. its working fine. thank you!

issue, look at the difference from DOS to Windows, now that is a major change.

true, and I looked at windows 7 screenshots and it looks identical to longhorn. I also heard someone saying that "vista was developed by a server team, while win7 is being developed by a user team"? Everything from here on out seems to be going the way of vista style. I should just get used to it.

Youre looking at a pre-pre-alpha, the real windows 7 will most likely look as similar to vista as vista did to XP. And what you heard is pretty much nonsense.

gaming performance is worse than xp, yet getting better, and the drivers are all here now.

The difference is negligible at this point, its really only a theoretical argument so that someone raving about how bad vista is can point to a 2% drop in fps as how SLOOOOW it is.

Also i don't plan to use 64bit vista or xp - i dont need it for anything. my laptop has 2gb of memory wonder if 4gb would be better?

If i keep vista i am going to need to know how to do things to speed it up. people said disable system restore, bitdefender, and some processes or system resources... etc. I also don't like how the HDD spins and fetches data all day long. xp seemed to just use it when needed, and not ahead of time. I would like to disable all these prefetching background applications, and kind of make things more simple. Also it would be nice if i could use the old explorer (details) view.

You might as well just keep using XP. Theres no point using it if you're going to do everything you possibly can to make it like XP.

If you really want to use Vista, here's what you have to do:

1- Accept the fact that disk access is not your enemy, and learn to ignore it. In reality, it's not slowing you down as much as it sounds like it is, and it quiets down quite a bit after a day or so.

2- Accept the fact that you can't have something for nothing. You want better security, a prettier interface, indexing, etc, its going to cost some RAM and CPU cycles, and yes, your disk might crunch for seemingly no reason every now and then.

If your primary concern is that the OS uses as little as possible of your system under all circumstances, just keep using XP. Don't bother trying to make Vista into XP.

Microsoft had offered a "downgrade program" for Windows XP Pro to Win ME/98 for businesses that were unwilling to make the switch to XP. This is nothing new and is certainly not unique to Vista. The fact that people have to use the downgrade program to justify how bad Vista is shows how weak their arguments are. Vista is not perfect and is not for everyone, but it certainly is not the nightmare scenario some are making it out to be.

You apparently have never spent any time on ubuntuforums or any Linux forum for that matter. You certainly don't have to look far to find people who will tell you XP sucks and gives them nothing but problems.

I was happy with XP Pro SP2. I'm still happy with XP Pro SP2 though it is running on a Virtual Machine on my Vista HP x64 system and I'm very please with Vista. It looks pretty I have the ram to handle it and I don't notice a difference in games...

Apparently he's never read past threads from when XP was new. Most of the complaints about Vista are verbatim to what was said about XP.

Ding Ding Ding!

Runs slow...Ding!
Too much RAM/resources...Ding!
Incompatible With [insert here] ...Ding!

And the same slackers will eventually be running Vista...or Windows 7...and we'll have the whole debate over again about Windows 8 or whatever the hell it will be called.

History repeats itself, they say. Sure has been proven true around here.
