Vista SP1 x64 vs. Vista x86

Well...I'm building the system as stated in my sig (parts coming in 3 days!!!) so my basic question is...which operating system do I use?

I currently have on hand the following OS's:

Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1
Vista Ultimate x86 with SP1 as a seperate install (vanilla Vista Ultimate to start with)
Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows XP x86 with SP3

My basic question is...which will I get the most out of? Windows XP I know and love...and DX10 really isn't that big of a deal...I can live without it for the time being as the only game that I own that REALLY supports DX10 is S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky. Crysis not so much as DX10 features can now be enabled through DX9 and runs much faster at that.

Also...is the 4GB RAM not being used still an issue with the x86 version of Vista? I heard that the SP1 solved this issue but at a loss in performance.

I AM A GAMER through and through...so my main concern is gaming performance on each OS. Driver support seems to be quite normal nowadays with Vista x64 and I use no legacy hardware that might not have drivers...so drivers I'm not worried about.

I will be overclocking as well...both CPU and GPU...will I expect a performance/stability issue's from OS to OS?

Anyone that can help make my decision a little easier would be appreciated...right now I'm leaning towards Vista x64 SP1.

vista 64 and call it a day. there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I've never had a compatibility problem or a crash. It runs quite speedy with any modern PC with enough ram, CPU, and video power. Looks like you have more than enough power to run it.

All I ever hear is FUD FUD FUD about vista.

windows 7 will give you a similar experience, but I'd just use vista for now and full version of windows 7 whenever it comes out.

Another vote for Vista x64. I've been using it for a long time. It's not slower, it's not unstable, there's nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, only thing I had an issue with was slightly slower gaming scores...but meh system should be fast enough to not be able tell any difference...Windows Vista x64 it is!!!

It's always a good idea to install two OSs and multi-boot. That way if one fails you can still use the machine.
I had basically the same choices and installed XP Pro sp3 x86 (two copies, as it's my main OS), Vista Ult x64 (to try, I thought I would kind of naturally migrate over to it, but never did) and Win7 x64 (out of curiosity).

On a side note, I think I'm going to be buying Win7 as soon as it's available. It's great.

people dont go by the looks of these oses
only buy vista or 7 if u wanna game
these oses are too secure for ur own

u will simply find urself being asked by the oses again and again again and again to allow a program even some times it blocks u to copy a file from one folder to another
u will always find ur self try to lower the securties for you re folders

and networking is almost impossible on these oses ....
only buy vista if u need dx10
xp + looks + useless security + dx 10 - networkin abilities = vista
looks and dx 10 can be got on xp too

See, I'm just not a big fan of "multi-boots"...having to install the same program/game twice for each OS is just time consuming, hard drive consuming, and just plain silly I think...I'm just looking for the single best OS...since DX10 isn't that important and there's little to no difference in graphics for the most part I'm thinking WinXP SP3...that's my first instinct...go with what you know works...but I've read that with SP1 now Vista x64 seems to be the fastest (overall) and the most stable now compaired to XP and Vista x86.

This isn't a problem with me in Vista as long as UAC is turned off (whats the point of this anyways...for uneducated users who install unknown apps?).

Windows XP SP3 is just old...but tried and trusted...DX10 seems to be becoming a reality...but its just in beta form right now, and I don't know if I even fully trust XP's API to be able to fully support DX10 at that, not to mention the possible slowness of DX10 in XP.

I mean, in my eyes Vista x64 seems like what I need overall...Windows 7 would be a good choice...but it being a beta (although a near perfectly running OS) the driver support isn't quite there yet in my opinion and performance is still alittle under XP and Vista.

I'd go with Vista 64 myself. My experience with it has been very positive.

There will be another round of hatred and FUD when Windows 7 is released though, people don't like their computers to change.

I wouldn't turn UAC off unless you have a VERY GOOD antivirus. I leave it on. It is a minor annoyance but it gives another level of security.

I have not noticed a performance difference in games from XP->Vista64

I don't run an anti-virus...I don't understand why a lot of people get so badly attacked...I just don't go to any whack site/open unknown emails, etc...I've never had a virus/trojan/spyware/malware to be completely honest...how do so many people get them?

In either case I am going with Vista x64...I've already decided...just currently seems like the best option.

What does anyone here know about the Server 2008? I ran Server 2003 for the longest time with no compatibility issues and man was it fast...even faster than XP...I mean, games ran like 10% faster...it was amazing...is Server 2008 the same? Thanks.

Switched back to Vista x86...64-bit was horrible...so many game compatibility issues its sick...people need to be warned about this in a disclaimer from Microsoft or something.

What compatibility issues were you having?

Also what kind of disclaimer? The one that says 64-bit... that is enough for someone to research if their program will work under this "new" version.

Without UAC or an anti-virus, Vista will be horrible, no matter the version.

Well, its not only that alot of my games won't run, but I also don't like the fact that you can only used signed drivers...Omega drivers and Rivatuner can't install at all.

Oh well, back to x86.

Server 2008 32bit anyone?

Well, went ahead and upgraded to Server 2008 x86 and OMG amazing...I'm getting 6fps avg. more in Crysis v1.2 than with Vista x86 SP1...and that was with a slimmed down version of Vista...not the bloated retail version.

I gotta say so far I'm extremely impressed...and all the Vista compatible drivers and software work just fine under 2008. I used Server 2003 back in the day...shoulda known that 2008 would've been the better choice from the get go.

Sounds more like PEBKAC than anything else. I've used unsigned drivers and even older games have worked fine for me. I have not noticed a performance difference between XP32 -> Vista64. Also slimmed down version, not the bloated retail version??? Seems you seriously need some help. Try Video Professor.

WTF are you talking about Video Professor? What I mean is that I have a special copy made by me via nLite that excludes all the "BLOAT" AKA unnecessary crap thats in Vista...please don't insult my intelligence on the matter.

As far as 2008 being faster I have in fact confirmed this by testing many games and 2008 is indeed faster overall then any other OS I've recently tried...people say 2008 is the exact same as Vista...they're wrong, MS did something right with 2008 and its screaming fast compared to anything else I've used.

As far as how I'm getting all these...I work as a PC repair specialist at a local PC shop...lets just say these OS's just happen to fall into my lap from time to time.

Omega drivers have not even been released for Vista, whyyou would not use latest ATI Vista drivers is beyond me,as to unsigned drviers thats security feature of Vistax64 and can be worked round if needed, peronally you can use other software rather then Rivatuner.

I find a lot of games run fine in Vista x64(oldies like Might and Magic 7 infact one guy has over 400 games working in Vista),infact I have Vista x86,Vista x64,XP,Win7 beta,to be fair Vista x64 won't run any very old 16 bit games buts that because no legacy 16 bit support in the OS ie you could argue it makes the OS leaner due to no 16 bit support/software crap in the OS.

Side Note you normally find people forget to update DX9.0c in Vista x64 (some games require full DX9.0c rather then the basic 9.0L version Vista ships with)also copy protection can cause issues,ie older Starforce protected games (simple fix is to get updated copy protection version for Vista x64 via their website and foolow their instructions before you install the game unless you want to use a hack).

As a beta games tester and general gamer I can say Vista x64 runs a lot fo games just fine, also remember some games need to be run as admin or/and XP compatibility mode (be surprised how some gamers don't even try that).
Speed wise I have not noticed a lot of difference between most of them, main exception is Win7 beta seems to be nippier on very old systems(ie nforce 2 rig I'm testing it with) then the XP OS it has replaced.

Recommendation from me is Vista x64 with 4GB,ram is cheap right now and more ram will always help games regardless of OS in question.I personally would not even use Win7 with less 4GB (thats because ram is cheap and sooner or later more ram is always better for gaming).

Also...is the 4GB RAM not being used still an issue with the x86 version of Vista? I heard that the SP1 solved this issue but at a loss in performance.

It still as the memory limit due to x86 OS.

Windows 7 would be a good choice...but it being a beta (although a near perfectly running OS) the driver support isn't quite there yet in my opinion and performance is still alittle under XP and Vista.
Don't get me started on Win7 beta and issues I have had right from clean install let alone drivers and software issues, I would say stay way away from Win7 beta for a dedicated system, official retail version will probably be a different story but still no confirmed date,Win7 beta is far from perfect ,to be fair its beta but I always get a cringe when people say something like "although a near perfectly running OS",yes it will be with later versions, give it time but not right now.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit version on my gaming system. No problems so far. Very stable with most games.
Vista drivers work fine with most hardware (video, Network, Sound, etc)..
