I missed the part in the terms of use for this forum where it said the number of reads and replies to a thread allows a poster to post things that are untrue.

I thought Bill was being pretty respectful in pointing out that what you posted was incorrect. You need to relax and realize that not everything you post will be correct, no matter how correct you think it is ;)

Arguing about the difference between 'ground-up', 'total', 'major, 'minor', and so forth, is just plain dumb!
Not sure where you're getting that. You said SP1 was a total rewrite. We are saying you are incorrect. That's all.

I see.

It's a 434MB (455,562,200 bytes) for x86 - 726MB (761,740,600 bytes) for x64 - bug fix, not a total rewrite...

Can we continue now?!?!? :D

According to Ye Olde Microsofte:

Express. Requires an Internet connection but minimizes the size of the download by sending only the changes needed for a specific computer (approximately 60 MB for x86-based operating systems).

So if you're a network administrator who wants the whole enchilada on hand, sure, it's big. If you just want what your system actually needs, then keep it in perspective... to give a frame of reference, Adobe Reader is 22MB in compressed form, about 90MB in fully-installed form.

You know the Vista WIM is like 4GB right? And that a default install is like 15GB?

If SP1 was anything approaching a total rewrite (which it isn't), it would have a lot more of the bugs I submitted fixed :)

I see.

Now it's a 50 - 100 MB WU update...

WU uses RDC to compare the currently installed OS files with the SP1 files on the server - downloads the changed portions from the WU server - then combines the updates with the unchanged contents on the computer being upgraded.

It's a total update - not a total rewrite!

Everybody happy now? LoL!

Can we continue?!?!? :D

*FLASH*

Microsoft pulls Vista SP1 update

Microsoft stopped distributing the update on Wednesday, according to a blog post by Microsoft product manager Nick White.

Update on Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite KB937287

We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287, the servicing stack update I blogged about last week, and I wanted to provide a quick update for you. Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.

So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances. We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue.

Customers who may be experiencing this issue can use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting. Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center soon.

Man! Sometimes you gotta be careful what you ask for! :)

I've been running SP1 for quite some time, in 'computer years', with no problem(s). However...

Toshiba just came up with a fresh round of updates for my lappy (in early March) and none - zero - zilch work with SP1.

So, I *guess* now we're going to experience a reverse backlash - waiting for OEMs to catch up with SP1.

LoL!

I've had to do three (3) System Restores in the last two (2) days, because of botched Toshiba upgrades to my Vista SP1 lappy.

Oh, what a tangled web MS has weaved!

Once burned, twice aware...

I'm getting out of Dodge, so to speak, and not upgrading jack for a couple months now... :D

Looks more like a tangled web Toshiba weaved.

If those are new Toshiba upgrades in the March timeframe, I'd be blaming them not MS. Vendors have had more then enough time to test and prepare for SP1.

Well, continuing with the 'tangled web' analogy...

Heh!

Remember in 'The Matrix', when Neo took the "pill" from Morpheus, so he could see how deep the rabbit hole goes?

'Our' lappys are probably made by the same company! ;)

Toshiba doesn't make laptops, and neither does Compaq/HP, or Dell, or anybody else...

For instance, my Toshiba A215, so called, is actually manufactured by Compal - the second largest maker of laptops in the world. It's basically a Compal JAW91 with a Toshiba badge, and a few modifications. If you check into your lappy's pedigree, you'll probably find that we're blood relatives.

Anyway, the point is, Toshiba didn't make my laptop, nor did they make the upgrade, so I wouldn't judge them too poorly!

We'll just have to wait n' see how this all pans out... :D

True, albeit Inventec makes most of Toshiba's laptops now, then Asutek. Comal is actually a pretty minor Toshiba player (at this point, they used to do most of the systems)

Toshiba is responsible for the software release. The point being, they have no business shipping those *software* updates in March without SP1 testing. The just wind up scewing up machines, as you've seen.

We'll just have to wait n' see how this all pans out... :D

Im sure it will be fixed in month or two, its the way it always works. You seem to like installing updates on day 1 (nothing wrong with that, but alas sometimes this happens)

Okay, alrighty then...

I just uninstalled 'SP1 Refresh 2' - took about 45 minutes, followed by 25 minutes of 'disk grinding' - then silence, soooo...

I guess it's safe to go ahead and install the Real McCoy!

Here goes nuttin'... :D

Why don't you try to install the standalone SP1...?

It seems to have fixed my startup issue I've experienced with the "accidental" February release of SP1, and the computer feels much smoother, too...

I've had a bad problem after uninstalling the February SP1 though (Windows Updates stopped working). It has been fixed by the standalone SP1.

For me, this is the last time I install the "pre-release" versions of major updates - no matter what anyone says about them being "final" ;)

Oh, absolutely!!!

I would NEVER use WU for a 434.5 MB bug fix/patch/major update/whatever, unless I had to...

I downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330) before I did anything else!

Matter of fact, if I COULD NOT have downloaded a standalone package, I WOULD NOT have upgraded - period. Exclamation point!

The first SP1 beta I downloaded (in Dec 2007) was a standalone - worked great!

For all the rest, I had to use WU - and EVERY one of them created issues for me - missing icons, disabled services, changed screen resolution, et cetera.

Anyway, uninstalling 'SP1 Refresh 2' and installing 'The Real McCoy' was unremarkable - worked perfect, the first time!

I'm happy... :D
