Vista RC1 Released CPP x86/x64

Just my luck... It gets released 2 days after I install 5536 in a virtual machine. Looks like it's time for a new virtual machine. 🙂

If you have a Wireless LAN card based off the Realtek RTL8180L chipset, be sure to remove it from your computer before installing RC1 x64.

I have such a card and could not figure out why the installer would fail after the "Preparing to start for the first time" screen. It turns out that it, like Beta 2, loads a non-working driver for the card and causes the failure (the Beta 2 installer would crash, but restart and continue on). I removed the card during install, put it back afterward, and I'm online right now (but I have to disable integrity checks).

The driver it loads is "RTL85n64.sys" and the one that I got from Realtek's website is "RTL8180A.sys". I filed this as a bug in beta 2 and I'll file another here.
 
Will I need a key to install this and keep it working for more than 14 days? If so, I have one from the public Beta 2 release, will that work?

FYI - A MSDN key from one of the CTP or beta builds will work as well (or at least it has on all of the other 'public' releases).
 
Running the x64 version right now...other than the fact that Creative's driver support still sucks (I had to use the XP64 drivers and have to disable the signed driver check at every boot) and ATI's drivers don't quite seem to do OpenGL right now, I'm actually quite impressed. Performance is much improved from Beta 2, and I actually feel I can stay in this OS for most of the time. Boot time isn't too bad either.

Any trick to getting the XP64 Audigy drivers working? The installer for Creative's Beta 2 drivers (I have RC1 x64) crash during the install, even though I disable integrity checks at boot (using bcdedit no longer works). Edit: nevermind, got it working with stereo sound.
 
Very odd that both Beta2 and 5536 installed perfectly onto a clean, second HD with an Opteron 144 clocked way up at 2.8 default.... now loading RC1 it puked on the install and gave me a CMOS checksum error at bootup, resetting the BIOS back to defaults. I just loaded 5536 last weekend so I find the timing odd in that error screen. I've seen before that an OS install would not work on an overclocked PC (Celeron 300a@450 installing W2K) but haven't seen that since that time.
 
Downloading it now .... halfway there.
Hope this installs better than 5536 .......... for some unknown reason when I tried to install it it went into a black screen after the last reboot and my monitor indicated it was out of range. Couldn't get it to install to save my life. Beta 2 installed just fine so I don't know what has changed since then. I even tried to upgrade from Beta 2 to 5536 and the same thing happened. MD5 checked out alright so I'm pretty certain the burn was good. Well, I guess I'll know in about an hour or so from now. I'll post my findings later, (hopefully on RC1).

Install it to a separate drive/partition and you'll be fine. It will overwrite the boot loader (though you can still boot to XP by choosing "Earlier Version of Windows" at the menu), but if you decide to get rid of Vista later you can always boot to a recovery console for XP and run "fixboot" (or "fixmbr", I always forget which is which 😛) to restore the original XP one.
