Thanks.

Install it to a separate drive/partition and you'll be fine. It will overwrite the boot loader (though you can still boot to XP by choosing "Earlier Version of Windows" at the menu), but if you decide to get rid of Vista later you can always boot to a recovery console for XP and run "fixboot" (or "fixmbr", I always forget which is which :p) to restore the original XP one.

Actually before you run fixmbr you have to go into XP and remove the files/folders that Vista puts in there otherwise it won't work.

Hope this installs better than 5536 .......... for some unknown reason when I tried to install it it went into a black screen after the last reboot and my monitor indicated it was out of range. Couldn't get it to install to save my life. Beta 2 installed just fine so I don't know what has changed since then. I even tried to upgrade from Beta 2 to 5536 and the same thing happened. MD5 checked out alright so I'm pretty certain the burn was good. Well, I guess I'll know in about an hour or so from now. I'll post my findings later, (hopefully on RC1).

That's strange. 5536 installed perfectly for me but Beta 2 did what 5536 did to you. I could never get Beta 2 installed. 5536 is pretty decent. I'm currently downloading RC1 and should be able to install in the AM.

Quick Question.... Can you treat the OS as and upgrade for XP ... i mean like can i just upgrade it without reformatting my hdd? if i can is it safe cause it sounds like a lot of ppl reformat before they install it. And can anyone who has done an upgrade without reformatting confirm that it works flawlessly? Sorry for these stupid questions.

Ughhh .... trying to bump my PC back to its previously stable as a rock state, and both XP and Vista took a crap on me. I musta missed a BIOS setting here or there, as its running now, but no network connectivity at all in Vista !! Onboard LAN is enabled in BIOS, so I booted back to XP where it remained ofline. I ended up resetting the router and its working again, but I am somewhat disappointed that two previous builds of Vista were essentially stable on my rig but the RC1 build has introduced several bugaboos already.

1) network connectivity weirdness (might have been a fluke)
2) missing quick launch icons ... where'd they go ??
3) unstable installation on O/C'd rig when previous builds worked fine

Two quickies here fellas ... where's the RUN command on the Start menu ??? And how do I make those fugly shortcut arrows go away ???

Absolutley Awesome OS !

Fast has hell ! WoW loaded from the DVD in 1/3rd less time.

BTW- All nForce4 SATA RAID users, heres a heads up !

The RC1 Drivers at nVidia dont work.

Use the Beta2's. I did ! :)

You're not the only one who's had network issues. For a while mine was working just fine, then after a while it just refused to get an IP address or connect to anything. I rebooted into XP64, internet worked just fine in there. Back to Vista, nothing. I just ended up entering in all my IP/DNS/gateway/etc. info manually, and now that works.

Strange.

Edit: I also don't know where they put the "Run" command (and haven't really bothered to look), I always just use Winkey+R.

I've been using the search bar after hitting the Windows button. To run cmd just type cmd and enter in the search bar.

Well RC1 installed perfectly for me. I must have had a bad burn with 5536.
ATI has new drivers for Vista RC1.
Nero 6 installed with a warning that there were incompatibilities. I will try to burn something tomorrow (Nero Express will not launch at all though). This could be serious as I use Nero quite frequently.
Had to install AVG 7.1 twice but it seems to be working alright (did a scan to check)
Installed Realteks Vista drivers and my sound is working, I will test it more extensively tomorrow. I plan to Install Quake 4 and HL2 sometime tomorrow too.
My onboard ethernet was picked up on install and works fine.
Lot of testing to do tomorrow ..... too tired to do anymore tonight.
Seems really quick and responsive so far ...... can't wait to play with it some more.

I just loaded 5536 last weekend so I find the timing odd in that error screen. I've seen before that an OS install would not work on an overclocked PC (Celeron 300a@450 installing W2K) but haven't seen that since that time.

Thats because u need a "Rock" stable System to install Vista.

Really?

Were you having the issue where it would not pick up your raid partitions even after installing the drivers?

I'll try now with Beta 2 and report back!

UPDATE:

Nope. Still the same issue. On the drive select screen, it always shows me "298.1gb free" even though there's more. Then there's a warning at the bottom "you computer might not support booting to this harddiks. Please check the bios........"

It's a Raid0 with 3 ntfs partitions and it can't see any of them. Any ideas?

Synth ... coincidence here, but you're using the same ASrock SATAII board that I am. Are the Asrock board owners having issues with RC1 now ?? I love that board and consider it my best hardware purchase in many moons, but its very odd that we are both having the same issues on the same boards.

Vista took a dump after installing ATI Vista drivers on my 9500 pro. Signal out of range. Had to use system restore to recover in safe mode.

I dled this yesterday and am thinking of installing it. I had Beta 2 on my system for a couple of weeks, but games just ran too slow on it. I understand it is a beta and that I can expect performance decreases in some games, but the games I played were just too far of a dropoff for me.

So my question is this, does RC1 run games better than Beta 2? Please try to report back with your opinions or benchmarks with FPS.

Games I'm interested in are HL2/CSS, Warcraft 3, AOE3.

Also, I take it you can either do a fresh install with the RC1 disc or upgrade over XP. Is there any benifit to doing a fresh install. I have always done a fresh one just to get rid of old files and such, but I have only had XP running for a couple of months now since my last format.

Thanks

I'm not sure how old the ULi LAN drivers included with Vista RC1 are, maybe there's an issue with them? In any case, since I made that post last night, I tried setting my connection settings to "auto" again (get an IP address automatically via DHCP, etc.) and now it works fine.

Overall I'm happy with the level of driver support for the hardware I have now (now that I no longer have an HDTV tuner at the moment). Except for Creative, of course :p

Try unplugging the video connection on the back of the card then plug it into the other one.
I have an X1800GTO and got the same message so I swapped from one output to the other and it came right up for me. (I'm assuming you have 2 video outputs on your card).
In device manager it only shows one display device where XP Pro used to show 2. Going to research that today after I install the rest of my apps and a few games.

Thx for the update Synth .. I will do likewise on my rig tonight and see what I get. I'm stunned that the OS install could have knocked the router offline, but the timing was just too odd to call it coincidence. This router may get rebooted at most two times a year otherwise. Yea, I hear ya on the Creative driver fiasco ... we have competition in every hardware market except for audio and we quickly see how Creative can get fat and lazy during that time.

For anyone inquiring as to getting an activation key .. you can bypass the initial activation at installation and simply call MS to register via the phone. They aren't too concerned about users pirating their (free) beta or RC1 builds so they are being generous and doling out keys to whomever wants to test this thing.
Also, each key is good for 10 installs on different hardware, so if you have a friend that wants to test it but doesn't have a key, that option is available.

im gonna throw in an extra hard drive on my p4 ht 3.4ghz 1.5gb of ram machine and run the 64bit, i had beta 2 installed and it was usable but fixes were a must speed wise.. Im debating to try to run the 32bit version on my Compaq Evo P4 2.4 laptop with 1gb of ram.

So far RC1 is workin as well as you can expect from beta os..
I like the new install routine.. :)
clean install took 24min to windows.. All drivers were found except HDA Auzentech Xplosion soundcard.. But the latest drivers installed fine..

Intstalled EZ antivirus. Works.
Ashampoo burning studio works (and burns).
Winrar works.
Office 2007 Beta works..
I will try some other programs that I need little later.. But now i'm just playing around with this thing..

Haven't installed any nVidia display drivers and sure as hell won't before they have developed them further... Too many people are having problems with them (also with ATI ones) and those that came with Vista are good enough for me till more stable ones are available...

using about 400mb memory... I'd say it's an improvement when compared to previous Beta2 when my installed memory wasn't enough.. :)

No BSOD so far. But it will propably come at some point.

My PC on the sig..

Installed RC1 as an update to 5536. Worked just fine. Kept all settings. Took the better part of 45 minutes so I think it takes a bit longer than a clean install. Run is in Start-All Programs-Accessories. Since installing RC1 I have to reset my router every time I reboot. Corrects the problem but a pain in the butt.

Bill, what kind of router do you have ?? I have a D-Link with the same odd issues. I still don't have onboard LAN working on RC1 yet, having to go to a wireless USB adapter to get online.

I have a Trendnet TW100-S4W1CA. My motherboard is an Asrock 939Dual Sata2. I was unable to get connected with 5536 until I bought a router and then everything worked great. Installed RC1 and this showed up.
