can you get vista MC alone?

nope. you need vista.

Can you get it if you have the Business version? That's what my school gave me. I'm wondering about legal ways btw :), like some sort of upgrade.

you'd have to upgrade to the ultimate version.

But say if I get the ultimate version, is their an option to just install MC...im assuming not. Would I be able to run Vista w/ MC on a 3400+ with 1gb ram and built in Radeon X300?

Yeah, it'll work fine. But if you don't have Vista already just get Home Premium. It's cheaper.

Shawn, what remote do you use with your setup? Back when I had MCE2005, I used to use my ATi Remote Wonder 2. That thing was damn wonderful (RF and everything). But now ATi won't get off their lazy duffs and make control software for Vista, so I had to revert to using my old Logitech Cordless MX Duo (which works, it's just not as sleek... unless I mainly just use the mouse, which is sexy).

My experiences with MCE2005's media center were never great. The application literally died on me when I had MCE2005 to the point where it would start up to a black screen. I think trying to create thumbnails for incomplete files is what killed the program (surprising that it didn't have safeguards for this). I haven't had any problems in Vista yet, but I don't really use it. I mainly just use Media Player Classic and double click on the files on the HDD with the mouse :p. Not as elegant, but it works.

I used to just use the remote that came with my Hauppauge card but it had limited functionality in Media Center so I bought a Microsoft Media Center Remote and i can control everything now.

Actually though I'm using my universal Harmony 720 remote and it works with the Microsoft Receiver.

The quality of the Vista version of Media Center is one of the big reason to upgrade from Windowx XP.

For all that's using MCE, there's a free add-on called MyMovies which will cataloge your movie collection (dixv avi, iso, _ts folder, img) and display them as thumbnails with the dvd cover and the movie title. Each movie will have its own short synopsis along with cast and other misc stuff about the movie. Very cool add-on. You can check it out here:

Not that I care too much, but why would it matter?

Because you can't reply once it's archived.
