I've been using Vista for a long time now and while that feature trips me up from time to time, it also saves me a lot of F5 presses. It's mean to be more effective at keeping the directory looking the way it's supposed to and it does. Especially when you have a directory where multiple files are being updated at any given time, you don't want all sorts of shit sitting at the bottom until people slam F5.

Anyhow, learn how to batch rename and whatnot properly. For instance, Foobar renames all my MP3s, my camera software renames all my pictures.

Where this feature usually trips me up is with my downloads dir, which is usually my default folder in explorer, so I can tell what I downloaded by what is at the bottom, it's just a habit I've had to change, not a huge deal, sometimes change is good.

Pictures from trips, files from programming, mp3's, etc.

Note that copying files in to a folder of more than 10 existing files starts to become tricky to track down. It doesn't have to be in the thousands to be detrimental.

Personally, I use the directory structure to keep things sorted. Pictures go into a folder with the appropriate date, mp3s go into artist/album structure, other files go into directories as appropriate. What you're doing is roughly equivalent to dumping all of your belongings into the middle of the room, rather than putting them on shelves and in drawers.
Nonetheless, here is an alternate product that may function in the way you desire

If I go on a trip, I will leave all 1k pictures in the same folder. It makes no sense to split them up. Even if there were only 10 files in a folder, the issue would persist.

And dividing up my music makes no sense whatsoever. All mp3's I listen to go in one folder, with a second folder holding the items I'm not interested in at the moment.

I will check out the link at a more convenient juncture. Thanks.

I know how to batch rename; unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem. Naming two files completely different names causes an issue.

Say I have a folder of 100 pictures I've downloaded. As with most files from the Internet, the naming convention in nonsensical. As I go through each image and rename the file, they are instantly re-sorted in the folder. As such, it's impossible to easily grab a sub-selection of just the correctly named files to be moved in to their appropriate folders.

The poorly named files become entangled in the wisely named files - segregation of which takes considerable time and effort compared to the XP variant of simply leaving the order of files static until the user chooses to update the view of the folder.

Apparently, among vista's many quirks is causing the OP to post an operating system question in off-topic instead of the operating system forum?

Someone better notify Microsoft immediately so they can start working on a patch immediately!!

I like how instead of simply moving the thread the OP is flamed instead. Nice.

My method has no downfalls. You can choose whatever method you so desire without critique from me.

So what would you do if you wanted to copy a whole album to a flash stick or something? Look online to find all the tracks to the White Album and then look through thousands of mp3s to find it?

And apparently there is a downfall, else you wouldn't have posted this thread. Do you not have any folders under your C:\ drive?

Maybe he's saying that because you claimed dividing up music doesn't make sense (which I find to be an utterly indefensible statement).
