Vista: Change in resolution makes the display go crazy

I am facing this really strange problem in Windows Vista. If I change the resolution, the display goes crazy: I see lines appear on the screen in different colours/patterns...Then I have to restart the system to correct the problem...

This never happened to me with previous versions of nVidia drivers for Vista. This problem started as I installed a press batch of Windows Vista drivers...

I discovered the problem when I tried to play games on Windows Vista after installing the new drivers: None of the games displayed correctly when I started them. Initially, I thought that problem was in the card, so I tested out the games on Windows XP, on which they worked perfectly.

After numerous installations & formats of OS's, the determined what was causing the games to not work in Windows Vista: Any change in resolution (might occur during game startup) causes the game to not work. This turned out to be true, after I tried the same games again that didn't work before. Only this time, I made sure that the resolution didn't change during game startup (How I did this, is another story). Now the games worked fine in Windows Vista.

But I don't know what is causing the display in Windows Vista to go fuzzy when a resolution change is triggered !!!! ...Any ideas ?

I have also uploaded a small video clip, in which I start up GRAW 2...Because there is a change in resolution, the display goes crazy, although you can still hear the sounds correctly...

It's your 7900GT KO, mine does it too. One way to "fix" it is to slightly OC or UC your video card memory and ensure the program loads those settings upon bootup. I recommend rivatuner.

Well I thought that that might be the reason...Earlier on, I also had problems while playing games; I got artifacts sometimes...After some investigation, I realized the problem was in the 7900GT card....I tried downclocking the card using rivatuner, but it didnt work...

If you have be able to downclock your 7900GT KO, please tell me exactly how you did it...

There are a few massive threads over on the nVidia forums about this.

It's primarily a driver issue (just on the 7900 in Vista) - and nVidia doesn't want to fix it - if they do that, you're not going to buy an 8800 anytime soon.

Drivers may help, but there are no promises.

yep, viewsonic VA1912wb is a widescreen LCD monitor...

and if thats the reason why nVidia isn't fixing the problem, forget 8800, I aint buying another nVidia again ever....!!

Check the option...

Use my display's built-in scaling option while you are in the deskttop and then run the game.

Like I said, I've tried video card scaling and monitor scaling and they both glitch out. The only thing that that I've seen work is changing memory frequency.

Try this.

The newest drivers don't allow you to use the old nvidia control panel, so revert back to the older forceware drivers 9x.xx that allow you to switch between the old style and new style.

Find the res the monitor craps out on and select it. Go the old control panel and select "screen resolutions and refresh rates". Click advanced timings and check all the numbers and make sure they look right. post a screenshot of thetiming.

How about I just pull up my monitors info in it's status menu? It says 1680*1050 @60Hz. Rivatuner concurs. Tiger, have had much experience with this issue?

OK, now its my turn ... :D

1. What is the native res? 1440x900

2. What res are you running your desktop? 1440x900

3. What res is the game running when it goes crazy? any resolution other than the currently selected desktop resolution

4. And what scaling option do you have in the control panel? (go to the nvidia control panel, and click advanced view, and try to get to this screen) Right now its 'Use my displays built in scaling'

what should I do ?

I just saw your video on Youtube.

"The Celestial Star" LOL

Go into a resolution on your desktop that gives you the distortion while gaming. (the distortion only occurs when you game, right?) and then go into your old nvidia control panel and pull this screen up.

Post the screenshot. It doesn't look exactly like this, but similar.

OK people, looks like I have found a solution to the problem I am having (look at my posts/screenshots above)...It looks like nVidia forceware 158.24 WHQL Vista 32-bit drivers did the trick for me...No more bizarre displays when changing resolutions at 32-bit colours in Vista !!! Hope this helps out others too..

My thanx goes to people who hinted using the 158.24 drivers...

Also, in case you are wondering, I got these drivers from guru3D, like others mentioned as well...
