Visiting Stanford campus...

Hi folks,
Stanford is going to fly me out there to visit the campus (grad school). They're reimbursing food/plane for up to $500... my tickets cost $340, leaving me with $160 to spend on food.

So my questions for you guys: what's good around Stanford campus? I want to take full advantage of this free money 😀 (Note that I won't have a car, so driving out to SF is not an option.)

Thanks,
-Eric

that should be enough to eat at Stanford Mall (across the street from campus) or at some of the restaurants in downtown Palo Alto (a few blocks away--easy walk). there is a very nice Mediterranean place in downtown Palo Alto. I forget the name, or exactly where it is. (Nice as in great food, and also cheap, undergrad-type budget).

depends on the program. If you're in science, most programs pay you to be in grad school....considering that it's essentially an 60+ hour/week "job" and that you'll be making crap for the rest of your life anyways 🙁

Depends. I was flow all over the west coast for "interviews/recruitment" for phd programs in neuroscience. I doubt the same happens for english or humanities in general.

On Topic: There isnt much in Palo Alto (or down the peninsula in general), as someone suggested CalTrain to SF.

there's plenty of places to eat in downtown Palo Alto. typical fare to trendy. see my post above. Several affordable places at the mall as well.

plus...you can always survive at the on-campus Jamba Juice..

mcdonalds for breakfast
mcdonalds for lunch
steak and drinks all night for dinner, just make sure your bill doesnt say drinks on it unless they dont care about where the food reimbursment goes to

Uh, I'm sure I could eat for 2 days on a fraction of 160 dollars. I don't see the problem here.

He WANTS to spend the full $500 they are giving him for travel and food. Read the original post? Didn't think so.

Stanford is gorgeous. I'd suggest you walk over to Palo Alto. There's plenty of decent restaurants there. Oh and at least take a peek inside the campus chapel. It's pretty sweet.

You don't get flown all over the place, but if the university is genuinely interested in you, they offer you a free ride + stipend.

Why not BART?

The nearest BART station is a good 20 miles from Palo Alto..
