VisionTek is < *! My Ti4600 died and they won't replace it!

The card was about $400 when I bought it and it had a lifetime warranty. Looks like I'm s.o.l. now.:|

This is the reply I get from them:

We are sorry but the warranty on your card has expired. The company that provided the warranty for your card went bankrupt. Our company Hartford purchased the rights to the name Visiontek and Xtasy. All of their warranties were absolved within that bankruptcy. We continued the warranty repair and replacement for their card under no obligations, but more for service to the previous customers. Due to the difficulty of getting the Nvidia based cards, we are unable to continue to provide this type of service. The only option we can offer at this time is the upgrade option which will give you an opportunity to upgrade your card to today's higher end cards. Attached to this email is the form that you need to fill out. You will need to send the completed form along with the defective card to the address indicated on the form. If you have any questions, please call our Technical Support team at 866-883-5411.

Sounds like they're being nice to you more than anything else.
It's not the same company, they don't make the same products, and hence they have no obligations whatsoever to help you.

whats wrong with an upgrade option?

VisionTek doesnt make NV cards anymore.

Nothing wrong with the upgrade option if their Radeon prices were more in line with most others.

Yes, they are being nice. However, I think they should have to honor the lifetime warranties of the company they took over. I don't care if they don't make Nvidia cards anymore, they can replace with a 9600 or something comparable.

To me that's just a technicality. With taking over a company name comes upholding an image. They aren't doing this, and are now on my list of companies to never deal with.

upholding an image by dropping nvidia and beginning their run with ati by blasting nvidia products? been out of the loop long?

I totally agree.

With a brand name comes the responsibility to the customers who continue to look to that name for service and support.

If the company wasn't prepared to assume the baggage associated with the old Visiontek brandname, they should have thought twice before choosing to continue doing business under that name.

Who can say that in the future, they might again decide to switch to a new line of products, leaving the current ATI videocard users out in the cold?

Add me to the list of people who will NEVER do business with Visiontek.

What exactly is the upgrade option? Do they upgrade you to a different card fro free, do you get a newer card at a reduced price, or do they just want you buy a new card from them? The email doesn't specify, but they make it sound like they are going to simply swap your card out for something different. Why else would they want you to include the defective card with the paperwork?

They include a form to fill out. Here's the options:

Amount off for your old card:
Ti4600 -$125
Ti4400 -$100
Ti4200SE - $80
Ti4200 -$50
Geforce3 Ti500 -$50
Other -$35

What their new ATI cards cost before the amount off:
9800XT: $499.99
9800Pro: $399.99
9600XT: $199.99
9200SE: $89.99

I've been in the loop and know that they only sell ATI cards now. I think a 9600 Pro/XT would be a fair replacement for my card.

Not much of a "deal" since you can get a 9800P for $200 - $225.

Nope, I guess I'll try heading to CompUSA for the $199 9800 Pro deal. How do I try to pricematch it at Best Buy or Circuit City?

The deal at compusa is actually for $300, but gets reduced to $200 after rebates (one instant, and one mail in). Since the actual price of the card is $300, I am not sure if you will have any levergae with the other guys.

In Hot Deals thread people were price matching it for $200 at some places. I've just never tried to price match anything so I don't know who to talk to.

$75 for a 9600XT isn't such a bad deal either.

That's a pretty good deal on a retail 9600XT if you ask me. This new company has no legal obligation to you whatsoever, so quit you're whining and be happy that they're offering you anything.

The 9600XT is a good deal. However, it performs pretty much on par with my card. I know they have no legal obligation to replace my card, I guess I would call it more of a moral obligation. A company should not buy or use the name of another unless it is willing to assume the baggage that comes with the territory.

That's true, but why would a company want the name of a company that screwed their customers over ?

Whatever happened to the rebate situation and the old Visiontek ?

get the 9600XT for $75, better than having a dead 4600

I'll probably do that and then sell the 9600XT. I need a card now though, so I'll try to find a 9800 Pro somewhere tonight.

Technicality != legality

They have no legal responsibility to honor anything in relation to Visiontek/Xtasy. The fact that they're offering you anything at all is simply a gesture on their part, but are not required by law to do so.
